We were travelling by train so it was very convenient for Tendou-san, the monk, to pick us up from the Takasaki train station for a reasonable additional charge. Tendou-san knew enough English to converse with us on the 30-minute drive to the hotel. The hotel is small and charming, next to the beautiful samurai temple and garden with a koi pond. The deluxe quadruple room was very large for just two people. The kotatsu table was a nice place to relax and be warm. The futons were very comfortable for sleeping. Like other reviews mention, some of the walls don't extend all the way up to the vaulted ceiling/roof, so there is potential for noise to pass in and out of rooms. However, we were the only ones there that night (others were dissuaded by snow forecast) so we had the whole place to ourselves. We had dinner and breakfast; both were delicious with large portions. We participated in the morning meditation. Tendou-san explained some history of the temple, initiated our meditation, and then left us to finish we felt ready to be done. It was a very nice experience that I would recommend to anyone!

The staff are warm and welcoming! The staff was very helpful and took their time explaining things the best they could in English. The hotel is cute and clean! It’s small but cozy! The room was a nice size and the bed was very comfortable! The onsen was very nice and relaxing! The views of the mountains are beautiful! And the food was delicious and beautifully presented!

The food was great.. the staff was so friendly.. And the free massage after onsen was my favorite😍.. I am surely will go back..😍

Set in Minakami, 33 km from Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort, Minakami Onsen Aratashi Minakami offers accommodation with a terrace, free private parking and a restaurant. Lovely spacious rooms, helpful kind staff, Meals were well prepared and the afternoon tea on check in was a lovely touch. View from room and outdoor bath was stunning, so special. Staff very helpful when we needed extra help to contact local onsen, they were so kind and called ahead for us so we could keep our booking on very short notice.

Kusatsu onsen Futabaya offers accommodation in Kusatsu. Free private parking is available on site. It was very near the main attractions and everything was within waljing distance. The hotel itself was slightly off the main road and therefore using the navigation for driving should be used with caution.

Located in Takasaki, Dormy Inn is less than a 10-minute walk from Takasaki Railway Station. It offers air-conditioned rooms with free internet access and a public bath. Location is good. Staffs is very helpful. Enjoyed the spa in level 10 and FREE ice block.

Situated 35 km from Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park, 19 km from Ishidan-gai Steps and 2.5 km from Lunar Park, GUNPAKUMaebashi provides accommodation set in Sōsha. Phenomenal place for the money we paid (5 people in total, around 4k¥ per person), if we could have, we would have stayed longer. If the price doesn't increase too much over the coming years, there is no reason not to recommend this place. Easy to book, fantastic place (3 separate bedrooms, each with 2 beds), great and big dining and cooking area and even an adjacent living room. If you are in the area, go for it. Heads-up though: we had rented a car (parking space is available, more than enough), so I can't judge public transportation in this case.
