We were so well looked after by our room attendants. We told them we wanted to leave early the next morning and they came to set up breakfast early at 7.30 on the dot (normal breakfast time is 8am). You really get the feel of Japanese hospitality. Our room attendant couldn’t speak English well but he explained the whole dinner and breakfast to us using google translate. Everything was delicious using regional specialties. The outdoor bath in the room was amazing. This was a really special part of our trip. I recommend arriving at the 3pm check-in time so you can bathe as many times as possible! The dinner experience was really cool. It was a full set up from 6-8pm in the room and they came to set up our futon beds after.

Isoaruki no Yuyado Ushiogumo -6 years or older- features sea views, free WiFi and free private parking, located in Kawazu, 37 km from Shuzen-ji Temple. Our favourite of the four ryokan we had the pleasure of experiencing in Ryokan. What tipped it was the incredible staff, who went to every effort to make us feel welcome throughout, and managed to walk a perfect line between friendly and professional. We were particularly grateful to the one lady who took charge of both our meals directly; this personal touch - making sure you have the same point of contact throughout your stay - seems to be a feature of Ushiogumo, and was very much appreciated. The room and rotenburo overlooking the beach is beautiful, with ample amenities including a charming coffee stand in the adjoining powder room. Dinner was also excellent, with each course prepared and brought to us individually in our private dining area, as well as a sake tasting set that I thought was extremely generous in its proportions. In fact, I think maybe the most skillful aspect of the whole arrangement is that Ushiogumo does well to screen guests from one another, so that you have the impression that the whole ryokan is put on entirely for your benefit.

Situated in Atami and only less than 1 km from Atami Sun Beach, 素泊まり宿 瑞宝荘 features accommodation with sea views, free WiFi and free private parking. Host was extremely friendly; I was travelling with my son and we had great fun using google translator. Location was great. Room, although on the small side, was fine with a private bathroom. Small breakfast was provided and we were able to bring back food to have in the kitchen for dinner. We caught the beginning of the blossom season and Plum Park was an easy short train ride and walk. Also easy access to the bus to Mt Fuji lookout although we could only see the top of it due to cloud.

ペンション桜家 features air-conditioned guest accommodation in Shimoda, 600 metres from Shirahama Ohama Beach, 47 km from Koibito Misaki Cape and 50 km from Shuzen-ji Temple. Everything. The owners were so kind and thoughtful, walking us through the checkin process and tour. They made us feel so at home. The room was amazing, we had Japanese style with tatami mats and slept on futons. I highly recommend staying in one of these rooms instead of the regular beds. You don’t have your private bathroom, but they’re right outside your door and the bath is lovely. Yukatas were also provided so we enjoyed the full experience. Lovely location. You do walk up a hill from the bus, but it’s worth the climb. Amazing views. Shirahama beach is beautiful, and there is a nice cafe/shop down the road where you can eat until 7pm. There’s also a seven eleven at the base of the hill. So beautiful, so much care, and it was like we had a nice home stay. Will be back.

Located in Higashiizu, 35 km from Shuzen-ji Temple, Izu Hokkawa Seaside Guesthouse 伊豆北川の家 has a private beach area, private parking and rooms with free WiFi access. Really kind, lovely host who went above and beyond to help me e.g. dropped us off at the nearby onsen which was amazing. Very comfy beds, simple rooms. Lovely little place for 1-2 nights. Great seafood restaurant locally.
