For us Ashirvad Homestay was a welcoming and quiet refuge in an otherwise chaotic city. The location, a bit removed from the clutter near the river, is in an almost rural setting across the road from a park. Aman, the manager, was exceptionally helpful, changing money, arranging an airport transfer, setting up aboat trip and on Day One, negotiating a tuk-tuk for us. Trust me, if you do any of these activities, let Aman set them up for you.

For me, the location was a major plus point - the boutique is located right on the main road, so it’s easy to get to and there are plenty of shops around to grab a bite. It also means I was able to quickly get an auto to get to the varanasi ghats I came to see from Gurgaon. Rooms were also spacious and clean, just as showcased. The owner was on site when I was there and really sociable - he helped draw up a plan for my visit and catered to my questions on the city. I only wished I could stay longer, would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to call home in a new city!

This review is a little long but if ever there was a place that deserves it, it's Ileeka Guest house and it's manager Atul. This is not just a guest house, this is an unforgettable experience where you have the opportunity to stay above an Ashram (which takes care of around 20 Sadus) and which surrounds a small golden roofed temple. The entrance and door are spectacular. I have to say, staying here definitely enhanced the whole experience of Varanasi. It is one of the most unique places I've stayed in 30 years of world travel and right in the very beating heart of Varanasi. However, for the dormitory, you do need to manage your expectations. It is very basic and for those seeking comfort, it may not be the best choice. The water pressure in the shower is not the best and it's a simple room but I must as it was clean and the beds comfy. I would say this is a place for those seeking authenticity, have an open mind and more importantly, an open heart. It reminded me of the old school dorms when I first started travelling in the early 90's. However, from outside the dorm door, you can see the great Ganga river, you look down on the golden roofed temple and you are 20 meters away from Dashashwamedh Ghat, the centre of the Varanasi Ghats One other thing I highly recommend is to take time to have tea with the manager Atul. I used to have morning tea with him, sitting in a darkened tea house room, very close to the hostel. Those conversations I hold dear, as he's a very philosophical, sincere and an intellectual person. I learned a lot from my chats with Atul and he has a wealth of knowledge of Varanasi and India. Overall, for those seeking something unique, interesting and different, this is definitely a place I highly recommend. I simply can't imagine my 5 days in Varanasi without it.
