Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. When we made our reservation, we opted for the all-inclusive package that included breakfast and dinner. Both meals were fantastic! They consisted of a variety of small dishes, making it a delightful culinary experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. They kindly picked us up from our room for breakfast and dinner, and they even provided roomservice throughout our stay. Additionally, they always greeted us warmly whenever we returned from a day trip. The room itself was a pleasant surprise. It featured tatami mats, which we were instructed to leave our shoes at the entrance and wear our socks or slippers provided by the hotel. This unique experience added to the overall charm of our stay. Moreover, it was our first time visiting an onsen, which was a delightful and relaxing addition to our itinerary.

The village in the mountains was spectacular and we spent time just exploring the town and wonderful shrine on the mountain. Akiko and her husband were the kindest hosts and picked us up at the train station, drove us to a local onson and also drove us to a restaurant for dinner. The house had ample room for our family of four (two boys aged 20 and 22) and my wife and I. The shower and bath were comfortable with lots of space. Akiko brough us breakfast each morning at 7:30 am and even made us amazing sandwiches on the day of our hike in the Kiso Valley along the Magome-Tsumago Trail. The owners also run a restaurant and hosted our family on our final night. It was truly memorable as we enjoyed our meals, a couple of drinks and had a great conversation with our new friends and hosts. I can't say enough about these two as they treated us like family and we were very sad to leave.

The accommodation and facilities were lovely. The foot onsen was a real bonus after a big day's walk. Everything was well organized and the customer service was excellent. Our late arrival was accommodated on last minute's notice. We had a beautiful and delicious dinner which was conveniently prepared for us. The tent and the site had everything we needed including a firepit and a wonderful view.

It maybe a little bit difficult to find the exact location through driving, but the house owner replied messages very frequently and give great help.

My friend and I really enjoyed our time here. It’s an incredibly cute guesthouse with a great vibe. The shared kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of utensils to use and enough space to enjoy a cozy meal. There’s even a kotatsu! We also messaged them after booking to ask whether the room was mixed or female-only, as we were a bit concerned. We received a very quick response reassuring us that there was no need to worry and that a female-only room would be prepared for us. The owner is super friendly, and her positive energy is contagious. :) Since it’s located in an onsen town, there are plenty of opportunities to relax after a day of exploring. The building is newly renovated, so everything was in pristine condition, and also very clean. The staff was super nice and helpful. The location is also very nice being right next to the river, neighbouring the Matsumoto old town district. Nearby, you will find a bunch of stores, restaurants, izakayas, and even a mall. Matsumoto castle is also just a few minutes' walk from here. I'm a bit sad we didn't get to stay for longer.
