FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

We travel to Canberra annualy to host a dinner for xpat South Aussies. We love to visit, favourite to do's are the Portrait Gallery and AWM. I hosted this years dinner at the Lanterne Rooms. Faboulous food, very obliging staff and a great winelist. Other previous good experiences include the fabulous D'Browes Restuarant in Narrabundah, the East Hotel and the Commonwealth Club, a home away from home. Dirty Janes Antique Emporium is also, always worth a visit.

Our Nation's Capital, what is not to like or need to see! Well laid out City. Many attractions including New and Old Parliament House, good spot to ride bikes, indulge gastronomically, see politicians up close. Great short stay destination for families. Love the place :)

We went to visit Floriade primarily but explored so much more. The War Memorial is a must. There are lots of lovely cafes and restaurants. We drove around the Embassy District which was interesting, checked out the old parliament house as well as the new. So much to see and do. We will need to go back again for a longer visit.

We came many years ago when the children were smaller.

We came many years ago when the children were smaller. They are now adults and busy with their own work and activities. Coming here again at our later age brought great memories, but we are satisfied. Many places are still to explore in Canberra as we age. Regardless, Canberra has grown busy, many more halal food options, and really diverse population can be seen. Now, we think that it is a great place to live in!

Great location next to the airport - just a short walk. Funky designed hotel - large rooms with spacious bathrooms. Meals were very good (not the cheapest) but worth the money. The breakfast had a lot of options and was very filling for a day of sightseeing in Canberra. Less than 10 mins in a cab into the CBD. Flight arrivals and departures board in the lobby area which was useful for our outbound flight, given there were numerous cancellations that morning

Excellent location five minutes' walk to Civic (CBD), with cafes and restaurants nearby. Easy parking in basement (there's a fee for parking but that is pretty common in central Canberra). Spacious, clean room. Upper floors away from Northbourne Avenue have the quietest rooms. It's not the cheapest hotel in town but it's the one we keep returning to.

The room was excellent, very comfy, everything we needed and exceptionally clean. The location is excellent right in the heart of the cbd, close to theatres, restaurants and the parking was great value, very conveniently right outside the door to the hotel. The staff were friendly and efficient. We will definitely stay here again when in Canberra.
