The room was quite adequate for an overnight stay.

The room was quite adequate for an overnight stay. An interesting park opposite with historical railway items from the old Ghan train with information panels. A little further away in the park some excellent panels of Adnyamathanha art depicting Dreaming stories, with bilingual translations of key words.

Having travelled quite a bit in outback Australia, Hawker...

Having travelled quite a bit in outback Australia, Hawker proved to be pretty much as expected with all the necessities. Flinders Food Company was popular for good reason. It is certainly easy to get around the town. I travelled with my sister and cannot really comment on activities for children. Hawker was a good base from which to explore the Flinders. We enjoyed a day tour with Paul, a great guide from Wallaby Tracks Tours. Children would probably enjoy seeing the animals throughout the Flinders.

The townspeople were recovering from a major power outage...

The townspeople were recovering from a major power outage that had affected businesses badly but were friendly, caring and offering the best they could to travellers. The town itself is a gateway to the Flinders Ranges, but it offers its own tourism - Jeff Morgan Gallery, the local seismograph and interesting fossil artefacts, a beautiful RSL area, a local pool and good eateries, which may or may not be consistent in quality, as the pub had just had the cook walk out ( we avoided) and the Old Ghan restaurant's chef was unwell - the meal was passable, but not brilliant. The local cafe and new eatery were excellent. Fuel is expensive due to transport costs. Lovely church folk.

Hawker is a perfect base to use for exploring the environs...

Hawker is a perfect base to use for exploring the environs of the Flinders Rangers. Hawker itself offers points of interest, is well serviced with basics such as fuel, workshop, groceries, cafes and eateries with the bonus of medical facilities in town.
