A quintessential outback town that has made the most of opportunities for tourism. We booked three activities and each was excellent. The town had a variety of accommodation options and also has good shopping: spend some outback $$$ to benefit the town. We drive out and had a car but most accommodation locations allow moderately fit people to walk to pubs and restaurants. I like to support RSLs and Longreach’s was great for dinner. I have visited in the depths of winter and enjoyed the stay, but this September school holiday was the perfect time as far as weather goes.

We had a 3 night stay which for us was just right. Arrived on afternoon first day. Did Qantas Founders and the Wingwalk AM next morning - Outstanding! Mid afternoon we were picked up right at our accommodation at the Staging Post/Outback Pioneers for our 3 part tour - great value and very informative. Thompson River Cruise - afternoon tea and river cruise. Saw Emu dad and 6 young, lots of birdlife, turtles. Sunset Viewing - Movie and story re the relocation of Pride of the Murry from Echuca Vic to Longreach and its refit etc then its sinking. Camp dinner with story telling and finally Movie about Henry Readford / Captain Starlight - stockman/rustler. Next morning we did the Darr River rail motor trip and morning tea with Outback Aussie Tours. This included a bush/talk walk with explanations re various plantlife etc.

I have visited Longreach a number of times and this time was travelling through. The accommodation recommended the Bird's Nest restaurant and it was excellent. I have always enjoyed the Qantas Founders (they have kennels for dogs!) and the Kinnon's experiences are fantastic.

Quick visit to Longreach with family via road and return via train to Brisbane. You could spend a few days to enjoy all Longreach and surrounds has to offer. Be aware that the town still tends to close Saturdays from 12 noon and all day Sunday so plan your time wisely. Distance can lengthy if behind road trains or caravans -with no real dedicated overtaking lanes- so be safe and allow extra time if travelling to a strict timetable. The Qantas museum is well worth the extra time spent on a few tours.

All tours we did were excellent.

All tours we did were excellent. Qantas Founders - definitely do luminescent night before. It led into the rest for next day for a more complete experience. Stockmans Hall full of info. Self guided audio excellent how it senses which area you walk into and enable extra info to listen to. Don't forget to walk the Heritage gardens around and the walk into township so pleasant 2km. So easy on cemented paths while looking at vegetation. Merino bakery - pies so yummy. Starlight cruise a great experience. Chilly but if prepared a lovely night outside. Food hearty and delicious. Wholesome entertainment. And still able to retire before 9pm.:)

Longreach is very good with plenty of thing to do and see. I was surprised they had so many quality cafes and large IGA. Everybody were friendly especially the crew on the Longreach to Iifracombe railmotor.

Good location, far enough out of town to feel remote big night sky feel, yet close enough to get what you needed in longreach 10 minutes. The cleanliness of the room was exceptional, the way the accommodation was set out was excellent. Their attention to the needs of their guests is not notch (quality bed and linen, towels was excellent).

This is a marvellous - and beautifully designed and decorated - property in the centre of a most interesting outback town. My room (named Stable 12) was quiet and extremely comfortable. The staff were pleasant and helpful, looking after my bag on the final morning of my stay and providing a free shuttle to Longreach airport.
