A Busy Port Town with a Charming and Laid Back City Centre

The port town of Vigo is nestled off the pristine waters of Ria de Vigo and its famous Port of Vigo is the biggest and busiest fishing port in the world; However, beyond the port are the old narrow streets of the old town around Rua dos Cesteiros, and monuments such as Nosa Señora da Guía Shrine and Santa María Collegiate Church.

Vigo is home to many landmarks such as Galicia Sea Museum, Contemporary Museum of Art and the late 19th century Centro cultural Caixanova theatre. The streets are lined with bars, restaurants and cafés serving fresh seafood along with traditional Spanish and international cuisines.

The white-sandy beaches and Natural Park of the unspoilt Cíes Islands are a 45-minute boat ride from Estación Marítima. Popular areas in Vigo are America Square and the beach areas of Praia de Samil and Playa de Areas.

Vigo Train Station offers connections throughout the Galicia region, whilst Vigo Airport has direct flights to several international destinations.

Booking.com has a range of accommodation options to suite all budgets in Vigo and popular nearby cities such as Cangas de Morrazo and Nigrán.

Bus transport in this town we struggled with, so we ended up hiring a car. Trains are very good. We definitely stayed too long, there is not a lot to do here. The beaches we did get to see were lovely, wished we stayed near a beach rather than town.

Vigo is very interesting city to visit even though has lots ups and downs. If you like to walk it Is perfect for a not too big city. Casco viejo is interesting. If you have time for walk a lot, one day at CIES island is perfect.

Vigo is very clean and open.

Vigo is very clean and open. City has good shopping and food. The area close to the water has a few streets that are used as urinals at night with a strong odor of urine. In other parts of the city it was very clean.

Vigo seems to me like an attractive port city.

Vigo seems to me like an attractive port city. Beautiful views of the harbor. Pleasant walks through the narrow streets of the old town. I would recommend visiting the Cíes Islands and enjoying their charming beaches. People here are hospitable. I did miss breakfast a little — the breakfast culture here is different. However, the variety of juicy fruits was delightful. Cons: I couldn’t manage to get a taxi, neither through the app nor WhatsApp — it kept showing that no taxis were available. Public transport is not very practical. You can reach your destination faster on foot, but the distances can be tiring.

Vigo is not on the tourist radar which is surprising as it has most of the drawcards like lively old town, historic buildings and cathedrals plus a pretty marina and shops and sone nice local beaches.

Fantastic atmosphere of the city, excellent cuisine.

Fantastic atmosphere of the city, excellent cuisine. I didn't know Galicia had such good cuisine and perfectly cooked seafood. I think I've eaten the best in my life there. 😅 We will definitely return to this place. It is more valuable to us than the south of Spain. We recommend a trip to the lighthouse by the ocean - an amazing view, with perfectly sandy beaches along the way.

Great location . Can’t believe I navigated my self through Vigo but with google maps ( I’m pretty useless) found the hotel . Was a big celebration going on victory over the French in 1806 . Which added to the charm. Massive port and city but very likeable. Room was spacious , twin beds , lovely hot shower . Fridge in room . Lots of bars and restaurants near by .The road out to rejoin the Camino was easy to find . Staff very helpful and spoke good English . Good value for money for sure .

We had a fantastic time staying at the Hotel Atlántico Vigo. The room was spacious with a great view. The bed was very comfortable and there was even a mini fridge. The staff were lovely. Close to the train station and the centre which was buzzing for a Monday night I've got to mention that Vigo is an excellent city. The people are so friendly.

We decided to have a city stay while walking the Camino. The apartment was perfectly located for us to experience Vigo, a city with a great vibe. We wanted to stay longer. Check in was easy and the host was great. Communication while we were there and after to see if we needed any help while touring Spain was excellent. Thank you for our stay!

Beautiful location with access to a small beach within 2min walk from hotel. The main beach is approx 25min walk, and 50min walk to central Vigo. Spa, restaurant and hotel staff are very friendly.

Beautiful and modern hotel directly opposite of the main bus station in Vigo, walking distance to the city center and close to the Camino route. Breakfast was very good as well.
