Out of a Fairytale
Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

We stayed in a hotel within the walls and that was lovely (Auberge des Lices) and we visited the old town as well as the city. So much to see and do! This was our second visit and we were not disappointed (other than the note below). A slight caveat as one of party was disabled is that the walled City is not particularly disabled friendly. Those who stay in the other lovely hotels are afforded luggage transfer but those less fortunate with mobilty have to struggle waith bags and have to be able to walk quite a few hundred metres to get to a gate other than the main entrance which is the nearest to the Cite car parks. This was out third trip to Carcassonne and there is plenty to see and do. We caught the end of the Feria, which had a wonderful atmosphere but there are other events throughout the year, including the famous music festival and fireworks display in the summer. It is also a good base for visiting the surrounding area - on this trip, we took the train and bus to Narbonne-Plage for a dip in the Med (!) but there is some lovely countryside just a car or bus ride away.Guest review byNeilUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Carcassonne was enjoyable.
Carcassonne was enjoyable. The old town was magnificent although the tourism focus could be directed better, in my view. There were too many stalls, stores and shops with trinkets, which took away from the mediaeval feel. We enjoyed it best in the evening.Guest review byBITTENAustralia
