Fascinating former mining town right on the edge of the...

Fascinating former mining town right on the edge of the Vosges mountains which has a very strong sense of its own history, industrial and social. I guess that its location in this beautiful valley has helped it regain some of the prosperity of former times through encouraging both local cultural activities (eg the C'est dans la Vallée music festival) and judicious provision of good tourist facilities. Maybe this is not enough for every resident but you do get a sense of a town at peace with itself and welcoming of visitors. The history of the region, with its contested border with Germany, is still in the air, but not in a bad way. There's clear willingness to celebrate the positives of this unique mingling of French and German cultures.

Nice little town with a Super U supermarket in town and...

Nice little town with a Super U supermarket in town and Intermarche just outside. Market on Saturday morning and lots of shops and cafes (although not a lot was open - may be because we went late in the season.

Long bumpy single lane farm track to reach property.

Long bumpy single lane farm track to reach property. Accommodation is a farm situated on mountainside with nice views, but rooms are in need of upgrading as furnishings are rather tired. Hosts very welcoming. Most food is produced & processed on the farm. Being a farm - there are lots & lots of flies everywhere.

The town looked a bit "tired" and the hotel itself was a bit elderly and rambling. To have a rustic feel in the restaurant is acceptable but the room needed a sweep or hoovering. The owner, despite me asking in French for her to speak slowly, refused to do so. Although we ate in the restaurant I didn't understand what two dishes we had ordered until they arrived and even then only one of them. There was no menu !
