Its a really nice town which is at the moment managing to keep its own character. Loads of history and interesting things about it. Lots of good pubs and restaurants. Lovely walks around the area including the Thames and the Ock rivers. Seems to be quite a few events going on as well. I would absolutely recommend it. Handy for other places - Oxford, even London.

As a college student in the 70s, I lived in Abingdon for 3 happy years. When I returned in 2025, my heart sank when we turned off the motorway and drove through the outskirts in heavy traffic, huge buildings all the way to the centre. Luckily we were able to park in the centre and thankfully Abingdon had not deteriorated. There were several independent shops and in the square several independent coffee shops too. Walking down East St Helen’s Street was still lovely as was the church, all the Almshouses were in good repair and walking by the Thames still a pleasure. Thankfully my fond memories are still intact.

Delightful old town with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Lovely old buildings, especially the almshouses and the church. Friendly people. Good eating places. Smashed avocado at The Pablo Lounge is excellent! Good location for catching a bus into Oxford or for exploring the area generally. Walks along river delightful.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Cosener's House in Abingdon, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! This historic hotel, with its beautiful surroundings and rich character, truly exceeded my expectations. The location is perfect – nestled right on the banks of the River Thames, offering picturesque views and tranquil riverside walks just steps away. It’s an ideal base for exploring the charming town of Abingdon, with its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and the stunning Abingdon Abbey just a short stroll away. Abingdon itself is a lovely town, full of character and history, yet it’s incredibly accessible to Oxford and the surrounding areas. The train station is just a short walk away, and getting into Oxford takes only about 20 minutes by train – so you can easily enjoy the best of both worlds: the peace and beauty of Abingdon, with quick access to the culture and attractions of Oxford. The Cosener's House itself was amazing – the rooms were comfortable and well-equipped, and the staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. The hotel’s peaceful setting by the river was perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing, and the charming surroundings made it feel like a true retreat. I highly recommend The Cosener's House to anyone visiting Abingdon. It’s a wonderful place to stay and a perfect spot to explore this beautiful town and its stunning river views, with easy access to Oxford and beyond. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Abingdon on Thames is a splendid town.

Abingdon on Thames is a splendid town. The river is dominant but lots of good history (MG cars being my favourite) . Near enough to get to Oxford and Didcot for tourist sites. Town Hall Museum is great. Lots of great pubs!!

Before going to the hotel we parked up in Abingdon to look round the shops. First stop was a Costa for lunch and use the toilet. Very close by there was a market selling craft, food and other. Across the road there was a Coventry Building Society, charity shops, and other shops. Close by there are old builds, and museums.

Lovely place. Excellent location if you're visiting Oxford by car. Abingdon also has its charms so convenient for that too. Room was nice, a bit on the smaller end, but perfectly comfortable. There are other options available. Tasty breakfast and an excellent variety to choose from. Fantastic staff!!! Friendly and welcoming! Kudos to the team! Definitely value for money so highly recommended. We will be staying again for sure.

Hotel was situated in central Abingdon, which was ideal for what we wanted to do. Our little dog was well catered for with a bed, bowls and treats. Our room was also on the ground floor which was more convenient with the dog. Breakfast was excellent and lots to choose from.
