Folkestone has retained much of its old world charm.

Folkestone has retained much of its old world charm. It is a very old town with a lot of interesting history, from smuggling to being a main port for departure and arrival from France for many years. It is surrounded by gently rolling hills and is only about a 45 minute drive to Canterbury. Folkestone's main shopping street has many small shops as well as a Sainsbury, Asda and Lidl store all close by. The old high street is very picturesque with a steep slope and a cobbled road. Folkestone harbour is a good place to visit and there is both a sandy beach and shingle beaches.

We booked an overnight stay as we have stayed at the hotel before several times and found that it’s a good central location for the harbour etc. the buffet was disappointing. It was much better the previous time we stayed. The food was not enjoyable. We enjoyed the evening entertainment, so we will return and skip the buffet dinner.

Folkestone is just up and coming enough that it is still funky, but also general feels safe. The arts quarter and harbour are particularly worth a visit with excellent art galleries, great bakeries and interesting options for street food or fairly priced restaurant food. Mermaid beach and The Leas are especially beautiful, but there are a lot of steep slopes and steps, so you need to be reasonably fit.

Lovely beaches, one sandy, one stoney. Loads of places to eat and drink at reasonable prices. Plenty of parking. People are very friendly. There are lots of dogs. Plenty of toilet facilities which are quite clean.

Folkestone was a lovely surprise - so much to see and do - art everywhere, of all kinds (lights , sounds and sights!) museum great, lots of history, very wide range of restaurants and pubs. Great for families with the golden beaches and the harbour area with its surprise squirting fountain area! Cheerful place, quirky too. Easy to get buses for only 3 pounds each to neighbouring Canterbury, Hythe and Dungeness (adventures!) A vinyl record shop, traditional impressive promenade and gardens, free music at the bandstand - loved it!

Gorgeous - beautiful Sunny Sands Beach, Icecream and path...

Gorgeous - beautiful Sunny Sands Beach, Icecream and path way to the coast as you go further along to the Gold area via the stairs - such a peaceful area with the sound of birds. The harbour is beautiful in the sun and so lovely at night time for a walk. The old high street - for shopping lots of trendy things to buy. The best homemade elderflower ice lollies from the artisan shop for a pound only and the best kingsland spring water fruit drinks The Atma lounge on high street - highly recommend for meditation and peace, great food on Sundays and early morning breakfast and check out their secret garden via their shop next door. For vegans and veggies - check out - Cafe Atma - the cheapest cafe on the planet with great food in Hythe/Saltwood area. Open 11-2.30pm (hot food) and then until 4pm with a beautiful brockhill park next to it. Cons - not much choice of pure vegan and veggie restaurants. Taxis to get around are a bit expensive and supermarkets are a bit of a walk from the harbour and sunny sands beach

Massive emperor sized 180x200 cm comfy bed. Sea view with 2 large sash windows that can be opened. Fabulous shower both rain & hose options. Parking voucher for cheaper street parking £7 at the hotel. Great little coastal hotel in good location for walking along Folkestone’s esplanade above the beach (1km long) and easy access to the hillside gardens down to the beach.

My first stay at a IHG hotel & it has become my first choice for future stays. The staff were exceptional from start to finish. The balance between humour and professionalism was perfect, we have never stayed anywhere as friendly as the Folkestone Holiday Inn Express before.

The hotel was cheap. We wanted a stay close to Dover for an early morning ferry, and this was by far the cheapest in the area. We were placed in a far-off corner of the hotel so at least were away from the noise. Beds were comfortable enough.

I booked this for a cheap overnighter before getting the tunnel to france in the morning. Hotel common areas are a bit run down but the room wasn't bad. It was what I wanted/expected.
