Besides the unpredictable weather, Orkney offers a magical environment with something to interest everyone - including history, archaeology, wildlife, fishing, walking, beautiful beaches and other landscapes. Kirkwall and Stromness are exceptional for sightseeing and Orcadians are so friendly and genuine.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland. We found great gluten free eating options in Kirkwall (I will review on Find me Gluten Free). We arrived very late on Friday. Saturday we spent in the many museums, historic buildings, galleries and shops of Kirkwall. We did one day trip by bus and ferryl to the excellent Sccapa Flow museum. Unfortunately the only day we had to do this was Sunday, when the buses are infrequent, so we had to spend most of the day at Scarpa Flow. On the monday, we were on the late night ferry to Aberdeen, and could not stay or leave our luggage in the apartment. So we hired a car - and visited the prehistoric monuments and the museum in Stromness before spending some at Scapa Beach. We ate in The Storehouse restaurant, which was really hospitable and the food was amazing, then getting a taxi to the ferry termina. We had visited a couple of islands in Orkney before, but this was our first time in these parts - we will bve back!

Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology.

Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology. Mellow people. Decent public transportation on Mainland. Long, rich history. Beautiful place. Good charity shops and much locally made jewelry. Welcoming services at the cathedral and the Catholic Church. Good restaurants, but suggest you make reservations in advance.

The Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel are wonderful and full of fascinating wartime history. Maeshowe was a great visit with the commentary from our guide full of humour and interest. Ring of Brodgar and Stenness - atmospheric - as was Skara Brae. The St Magnus Cafe in Kirkwall is a great, casual eating place and the Ayre Hotel for something more formal - both with very good food.

Room with 2 beds, TV, kettle and en suite. Down the coridoor a fully fitted out kitchen and dining room with microwave, hob, kettle, fridge, toaster, iron and ironing board. Brilliant value. And it is central to Mainland orkney, so evrything was a mximum of 18 miles away. And on top of all that, Tesco, Lidl a 3 minute walk away. St Magnus Cathedral 10 minutes walk away.

Fabulous stay. Spacious bedroom, the communal kitchen has good facilities, excellent breakfasts. The hosts were very attentive. Best of all, the hosts took time in helping us choose which areas and attractions in Orkney to visit. As a result we had the most wonderful time with our sightseeing, and really enjoyed our holiday in the Orkneys.

Absolutely fabulous! A really special place, overlooking Kirkwall and walking distance from the centre. We were on Orkney with our bicycles and Berstane Lodges was a perfect base for our 4 night stay. The hot tub was a perfect way to start each evening. The welcome treats left by our wonderful host were perfect too.

Quiet location yet close to the cathedral and centre. A purpose built home for the elderly proved ideal as a self catering unit. Gina responded quickly to my messages. Haeli proved an ideal base for our cycle exploration of Orkney.

Hot tub! The lovely basket of Orkney goodies. Parking was easy and it was easy to find and to drive to other pats of Orkney from. It was a very well equipped house.
