FAQs about hotels in Oxford

City of Dreaming Spires

Boasting magnificent academic heritage, Oxford is a beautiful city where Gothic spires intermingle with medieval colleges. Comprising England’s oldest university, most of the 38 unique colleges are sadly only viewable from the outside. Two visitable ones are Magdalen College, considered one of the most beautiful, and Christchurch College whose quadrangle was used in the 1st Harry Potter film. Its cathedral choir also sings evensong.

Other notable colleges are Balliol and Merton, the 2 oldest, while Hertford College has the Bridge of Sighs. Next door is the cavernous Bodleian Library, overlooking the round Radcliffe Camera, the city’s best-known landmark.

The university also has a botanical garden and the best Oxford museums, including the Ashmolean Museum and Natural History Museum, where swifts nest in summer.

Unsurprisingly for a student town, it has lots of bars and restaurants. Oxford shopping is also good and includes England’s oldest covered market, brightly coloured High Street shops, and the Clarendon and Westgate shopping centres.

Whether you arrive by road or fly into London Oxford Airport, don’t leave without trying Oxford punting. In contrast to rival Cambridge, you punt here by standing in the front (rather than on the back). Easily accessed from the Oxford accommodation on Booking.com, the routes take in the River Cherwell and the Isis (the name for this part of the Thames).

The superb college buildings, open spaces, river (we enjoyed a 90 minute river cruise), eating facilities (especially ‘Chutneys’ Indian restaurant) and the lively atmosphere all contributed to a wonderful short break. Everything was in comfortable walking distance, but there are a constant stream of buses and it is easy to get around the main attractions via this means if you wish. If we had a minor criticism, there is a lack of litter bins and strategically placed benches - and watch out for cyclists as there are very many and you need to be vigilant when stepping off pavements!

The city is so full of tourists in and out of term its difficult to get a flavour of the place, save for having some connection with a college and services in their chapels (my preferences, by order: Exeter; Magdalen; Merton; and Christ Church).

I loved Oxford and cannot wait to return. It is a charming university city with much historical and natural beauty. Walking along the Thames and the Cherwell is a delight. The people of Oxford are very friendly. Excellent transportation options by train and bus within the city and to places nearby.

I recently spent a night in Oxford and had a wonderful experience. The city itself is absolutely beautiful — I loved wandering around the ancient college buildings, exploring the Bodleian Library, and simply strolling through the Botanic Gardens. Everywhere you turn there’s something photogenic. I wish I could stay longer! Will definitely be back!

The hotel was ideally situated on a good bus route to reach the city centre. Lots to do in Oxford and the trip to Blenheim palace was included. The staff were excellent and a very good breakfast was included. There was also safe parking. Would recommend this hotel .

There is so much to see in Oxford that a day visit is not enough, we had 3 days and I would still say there was more I wanted to see. I would book a guided tour of the Bodleian libraries and the Sheldonian Theatre, the only way you can see inside these buildings and tours get booked quickly. I would do a guided walking tour as the guides give you so much information. We did the Midday river retreat with Salters steamers which was a wonderful way to see beyond the city boundaries. They also provide a food option on this trip, which we did not partake of but wished we had and those that did said how good it was. Many colleges allow access free of charge, often between 1-5pm whilst others charge a small fee. Christchurch college appears to be one of the busiest with a higher entrance fee accessed via Christchurch meadow , very pretty. Although we did not go to any museums on this visit there are many. Do not rush, take your time, and enjoy the history of this beautiful city

The hotel is very conveniently located, not far from Oxford city centre, and beside bus stops where buses run frequently in to and out of Oxford. Our room was very clean, comfortable, and spacious. A very good breakfast is served, and both full English and continental options are provided. Shops and a good Chinese restaurant are also nearby. The hotel has its own off-street parking. The staff are excellent, very efficient friendly obliging and helpful. We highly recommend Remont Oxford Hotel.

Comfortable hotel in a quiet location on the edge of Oxford. Easy walk into the city centre takes about 25 mins on £2 on the bus. Our room was clean and quiet with plenty of hot water and a coffee maker. We didn't have time to use the restaurant or bar but the common areas looked good. Staff were friendly and helpful -- especially Claudia who seemed to be working all weekend but carried on smiling!

Hotel was perfect location for our dinner at Somerville College and for all the sites of Oxford 12 min walk to city centre & hotel has parking. Staff were very obliging & the room super comfortable & thoughtfully resourced with for example fresh milk. Food is good enough and certainly well cooked and tasty.

We have stayed here multiple times and really like the hotel. We have found it very clean, comfortable and quiet and it is extremely convenient for Oxford City Centre. The buses run regularly and it is a 24 minute walk at most.
