Everything about this wonderfully historic hotel was brilliant - our room and the rest of the building such character that I don't think I've seen anywhere else we've stayed. The staff are lovely and more than happy to help. Highly recommended, we'll be back!

Sadly, I can't comment on the breakfast. We left at 6 am to catch the ferry. However, the drive to the ferry was short and easy, roughly 20 minutes. The room was spacious and well-decorated. Good reading lights, roomy bathroom, convenient little frig. Wonderful staff. Restauant was good for dinner and it allowed for our free parking.

The room was excellent. Huge comfy bed, firm and soft pillows and a nice table and couch for me to work on my laptop. Well appointed bathroom and to top it off, Dove products. I was very impressed with the openess and modern feel of the place. Breakfast was simple but good quality, all I needed really. This is the first time I had stayed at a Holiday Inn express but it will not be the last if they are all like this. For the price I paid £64, it was 10/10

FAQs about hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

We came to visit the RN Dockyard.

We came to visit the RN Dockyard. We spent 3 days of the trip at various exhibits...submarine museum, Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and M33. Could have spent another day potentially. We also went to the South Downs around Chichester for a walk - about a 25 minute drive. Some nice pubs around Old Portsmouth and Southsea and interesting seafront walks.

The old port with Ss Victory and the Mary Rose was awesome. We had been told it was not worth a visit. Should have been compulsory ! The restaurant on the edge of the port was stunning. ( Wild and ?? ´Fraud I can’t remember all the name ) The ferry boats almost came into the dining room.

Nice city if you don't stay in a budget hotel. Great views of the historic docks as you leave on a ferry. Terrific nautical museum, visit HMS Victory an absolute must ! Internal traffic is frenetic and unforgiving, plan to get around by other means, taxi, bus.

Our trip was purely to visit the historic naval sites including the Mary Rose and Victory, but it ended up being so much more. Gorgeous accomodation, great food, lovely scenery and the locals were so friendly and knowledgeable. We would highly recommend Portsmouth as a place to visit for at least a few days.

If you like history Portsmouth is the place to go. So much Naval history . Nice shopping area lots of nice places to eat as well Visit to the Dockyard is well worth it and especially as you can use the ticket for a whole year so can return as many times as you want . The spinnaker is amazing especially to look over the view of Portsmouth /Southsea and Gosport . Mary Rose museum is well worth a visit too fascinating how they are managing to restore it

The hotel is located about 6 mins walk from Portsmouth & Southsea station & 20 from the beach/harbour. the hotel is modern with standard Ibis decorating. I was on the 4th floor. The room was a good size & had all I needed. Great blackout curtains & lighting good with several lamps. I ate in the restaurant downstairs & food was good & reasonably priced. You don't have to check out til 12.
