Beyond The Full Monty
Partially within the Peak District, Sheffield is best known for being the setting of ‘The Full Monty’, a film whose title means the whole works. Indeed, vibrant Sheffield has the whole works - excellent shopping, great nightlife and an impressive sporting heritage.
It first came to fame during the Industrial Revolution for its pioneering role in the UK steel industry. One technique invented here is commemorated in the name of its most famous theatre – The Crucible, home of the Snooker World Championships.
Close by are the peaceful Winter Gardens with their multi-arched roof. The Peace Gardens are overlooked by the elegant town hall, and the focal building of the impressive Botanical Gardens somewhat resembles Crystal Palace, also by the same architect.
The city’s 2 football teams – Sheffield United and Wednesday – play at Bramall Lane and Hillsborough Stadium respectively. The cutting-edge English Institute of Sport is also based here, and the nearby Sheffield Arena is a prime UK venue for music and entertainment. The best shopping is found in the Meadowhall Centre near Rotherham.

For over 60 years I have found the people of Sheffield the most welcoming population for my many enquiries over that time regarding 'where' places are in and around the city centre and the wider area and how to find them. Not only are they very helpful and welcoming BUT the number of residents who have offered to take me to a point where I could either see my destination OR see a significant landmark to reach/find my destination. It happened again this weekend - it always happpens and they are so reliable in their efforts, their care for people, it seems to come naturally to them to make visitors welcome ... notable and remarkable. Well done people of Sheffield and THANK YOU. The Bus Station/Interchange staff are similarly extremely helpful ... nothing is too much trouble. THANK YOU. My OAP Bus Pass/ENCTS Pass qualifies me for free travel on the Sheffield Trams but I live in the outskirts of Greater Manchester = TfGM area. Another 'plus' to add to the attraction of Sheffield. THANK YOU, Sheffield. This weekend, I explored the woderful Sheffield Round and today enjoyed Porter Valley in the glorious sunshine of the first day of Autumn - excellent cafe and staff and facilites at Forge Dam - I thoroughly recommend. Much nicer than I expected. Lots to do and see. Great transport system. roads and pavements clean, many of them newly replaced. Plenty of things to see and do. Quite easy to get around, and the city map is very helpful - though maybe a little out of date!? We were there for 2 days, and spent the first evening at the Northern General Hospital, after a trip-up on the pavement. The Ambulance service was great and the treatment at hospital very thorough. The second afternoon and evening was spent in the wonderful botanic gardens, ending with an excellent "Theatre in the Park" production of Robin Hood by the Ragamuffins. There was plenty of car parking options with good information provided by the hotel prior to arrival to help pick the right option. (Parking is an additional cost). The hotel room was clean and tidy and fairly priced for the city centre. Bed was very comfortable to sleep in with little noise outside which was great.
