We looked for a relatively unspoiled seaside within an easy train ride from London City Airport (LCY). As such, we just walked past Adventure Island in order to get to the longest leisure pier in the world, which is well worth a visit. We also took a bus from our B&B to Shoeburyness, and walked the 2.5 miles (4.5 km) back along the coast. We thoroughly enjoyed both these activities. We also ate very good meals at The Gold Coast Chinese, and The Camelia Hotel, ans well as delicious fish and chips from the Friary.

A weekend break ,we did the Pier/railway /museum attraction and walked the main seafront or strip as it's known locally. The second day a short railway journey to Leigh on Sea which was lovely and quieter.Where we stayed was central to everything

Town is a little run down but could not fault the staff at Adventureland they were all very young but extremely cheerful despite the bad weather. Having spent a weekend there I am not sure we would feel the need to revisit.

Southend is a good location , it’s a mixture of old fashioned seaside and has some hidden history. It can be rowdy near the pubs on the front at night but there is visible security everywhere. Parking is strictly enforced get an app and use it. There are some really lovely places around Southend to visit use Southend as your base and explore the countryside around it and if you like walking or running lots of nice long walks and the seafront early in the morning beautiful place to run for miles

Southend is my home town, I normally visit (from Italy) once a year. The area of the seafront between the Pier and Chalkwell is very beautiful with lots of green areas and cycling lanes and nice cafes to sit and watch the sunset. Unfortunately the town centre is very rundown and quiet dangerous (people with drug and alcohol problems), most of the clothes shops have closed, there is only Primark, New Look, Next, M&S and Peacocks, 5 shops and that's it. There are no decent shoe shops. Nearest big shopping centre is Lakeside an hour away. It's worth checking out Leigh on Sea (a 35 min walk or 10 mins driving) which has some small independent boutiques and lots of quaint coffee shops, trendy bars and old pubs. People are in Southend and Leigh are friendly and sociable.

Southend is no longer a great place to stay - sure you can visit the Arcades, go on the rides, have a drink but it generally is overcrowded by both visitors and overpopulated residents. No different to other seaside places I am sure. Traffic is awful getting there with roadworks everywhere you look - The A127 is awful, the A13 through Westcliff and Chalkwell is scruffy and the shopping is bog standard chains, even the Royals has gone downhill since the demise of Debenhams. Shame really - Known Southend all my life - Better in the 70's and Eighties. The council has a lot to answer for! Too many new residents on the whole.

Lovely property on the seafront. Just on the main road but was very quiet and peaceful. My room was on the front too and I had no issue with noise from traffic. You walk across the road and the beach is there. The room was cosy and so comfortable. Emma was very helpful and welcoming and the breakfast in the morning was delicious! I will definitely stay here again when I return to Southend.
