Sunderland proved a much better base for exploring this area (E Durham and Tyneside) than Newcastle, where I stayed last time. Less busy, certainly safer. Sunderland is still going through a transition from its industrial past, I'd say it's handling the process pretty well.

Sunderland is a city on the up.

Sunderland is a city on the up. There are very good restaurants and bars in the city centre, they have two great beaches in Roker and Seaburn. The riverside is currently being revamped and is looking great with new walkways and cycling

We were visiting family on this trip as I come from Seaburn, Sunderland. Location is perfect, lots of places to eat. We chose North a seafood tapas restaurant and it was fantastic. The beaches are heavenly and the people friendly. Perfect.

Well known as the greatest city in the UK, the people are wonderful and we were there on a sunny day so the seafront was amazing and the local dolphin pod we saw in the harbour seemed to agree. Would recommend sunderland to everyone

Surprisingly not an apocalyptic post-industrial wasteland...

Surprisingly not an apocalyptic post-industrial wasteland... the football fans and the people generally are some of the friendliest I have met in my travels around the UK. Ended up walking back across the city to my hotel as the taxis were all busy, quite enjoyed it - even heard owls somewhere down by the river. Local takeaways very reasonably priced and generous with their portions!

Our room was a lovely large comfortable room with a large bed. Bathroom with bath and shower. Breakfast was fantastic value and one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had. The hotel is wonderfully situated right on the seafront and very close to a main bus route into Sunderland city centre. Parking was plentiful and conveniently positioned.

Exceptional hotel for the price. Perfect location. The best breakfast of any hotel I have stayed in. I travel to Sunderland several times a year and always choose Seaburn Inn for food and location.

The location was great. The apartment was spacious and very well appointed. Comfortable beds and quality towels. The Roker Hotel is 50m away, and it serves excellent food and some decent beer.
