FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We visited the Christmas Market and bought a few things.

We visited the Christmas Market and bought a few things. The Jorvik viking centre was a really good visit, also we went to the Van Gogh immersive experience which was really interesting. Lots of little shops and quirky streets. Lovely little places for coffee and lunch. We would have liked to visit York Minster but it was closed for university graduation ceremonies. It was a very busy place.

Beautiful City, very clean with amazing Shops. However if it is history and culture you are looking for then York is perfect. The buildings are so beautiful and lots of little cobbled streets. Make sure to walk down all the little alleyways as there is always something to see

Surpassed expectations-didn’t venture outside the city walls! Experienced the amazing mayhem of a Saturday night in and around the Shambles - great pubs with fabulous atmosphere, food and music. Can be pricey for drinks in some places though. And so many restaurants! Beautiful buildings / architecture everywhere - a feast for the eyes. Just wish I could have seen it 100 years ago before the ‘chain’ restaurants and shops got hold of them but they are still beautiful. We stayed in the shadow of the incredible York Minster which was a slightly quieter area. An abundance of tourist attractions are available to suit all tastes. We went in November just when the Xmas decorations were up everywhere which added to the atmosphere - would love to visit again in the spring to take advantage of lighter evenings.

York is a nice city to visit. Attractive period shops.

York is a nice city to visit. Attractive period shops. Good mix of chains and independent. Some high end retailers have stores here. Vast choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants Steets are very busy on the weekends. The cathedral is the main attraction and is worth a visit but be prepared to pay for entry. I have visited the city twice and both times it was flooded because of torrential rain but that’s just bad luck

Such a lovely hotel to stay in. Staff super friendly and could not do enough when I had a small issue with my meal, replaced and drink on the house given! Beautiful breakfast and catering for dogs with water available, dog friendly rooms and full use of the foyer and reception area at night with them. Very relaxed evening at the hotel after a day in York. Perfect location for park and ride, 15 mins on the No2 bus into the city centre. Our second visit to mercury and will definitely be back

Hotel was what i would rate for a 4 star establishment Room was clean, tidy and unusually, to rate the bathroom which was spacious, beautiful, and ornate. Overall hotel met my expectations. Staff were polite, friendly and approachable. We made use of pool sauna and steam room in hotel near city centre, next to train station. Lucky to get parking space in hotel car park where we parked up for 2 days and walked into York town, which was approx. 15 minute to town centre

Spotlessly clean. Great Churchill theme throughout the hotel and impressive style of building. Ideal location for walking into York City Centre. Tea and coffee facilities in room. Handy light switches and plug sockets by the bed. Lovely beer garden with pizza oven for sunny afternoons and evenings - great food and drinks and easy ordering via QR code. We can't wait to come back here... Hopefully every year! We've found a new favourite hotel!

Great communication from hosts, location is very close to city centre and the apartment was very clean and tidy; was basically like a hotel (quiet, clean, private, not like someone's house) but with lounge and kitchen. Would gladly stay again if visiting York.
