Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue.
Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening. Want a unique experience then you must see Matera . We stayed in Locanda di san martino which has thermal baths and enjoyed a massage .Took an open car with guide and was worth it, went into a cave dwelling set up as it was in days gone .We just fell in love with the sassi in Matera !Guest review bymichelleAustralia - 10.0

Matera is quite a unique place to visit and Sassi Matera is nothing like I’ve ever seen and had I known that we would have planned a longer stay. It was so easy to enter the Sassi and you could go up/down and enter/exit in so many places. Matera was bigger than I had imagined, very clean and progressive. Our appartment owner gave us a map but they did not appear readily available , number of people asked us where they could get one. Take the green route and walk the full cit , really worth it. Descend into the sassi but do in the morning when cooler. Eat at burger and pale, divine ribs and wine only 4 euros a glass. Is a super interesting place to visit. For the most part, you can do it in a day and a half. The tour thst included the stone house and the rock Church was extremely informative. The TikTok tour has great views, but not as informative.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The Matera Sassi history and Culture Walking tour was great at explaining how Matera developed and the chequered life of the people who have lived there.
