FAQs about hotels in Siena

Romantic Renaissance

Located among undulating meadows and Chianti vineyards, Siena shines as a jewel of the Tuscan Renaissance, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the famous Palio di Siena horse race, catch the pulse of the city at Piazza del Campo, visit the beautiful Duomo cathedral…and fall in love with this charming city!

Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic centre. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.

The closest airports are Peretola Airport in Florence and Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, though Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna is also well connected. While planning your trip, don’t forget to check out the Siena accommodation deals on Booking.com!

Lovely old town with a fantastic cathedral and a museum with great gothic and early renaissance sculptures and paintings. We liked the local food and the friendly prices in the small restaurant (and wine bar) Fischi per Fiaschi.

Siena is beautiful.

Siena is beautiful. It is a much quieter cousin to Florence and much more enjoyable. Less crowds but equally spectacular places to visit. The Cathedral is a must and pay for the extra cost of the additional venues at the same time it is well worth it. Palazzo

This was my second time in Siena. Each time I stayed a month, with the first night at the Hotel Duomo. Siena has a very unique vibe, the people demonstrate a sense of community. Each month spent, was just right.

Much busier than I had anticipated; wish we would have had more time to get off the beaten path and see more of the quieter spots. Did a wine tasting at La Lostra which we highly recommend! Taxis are very difficult to get so prepare in advance and hire a private driver if possible.

Great and interesting city.

Great and interesting city. Been there before, many years ago, and wanted to see it again. The piazza Il Campo is fantastic - the most odd and beautiful square in Italy and maybe in Europe. Go up to the top of the tower and see it from above, amazing! Just to bad that the horserace Il Palio was in July and August, that would have been a great experience.

I was there for one night only and for business but managed to see a lot in two hours. I visited the Duomo but didn't have time for the Cielo or the Tower by the Piazza Il Campo. But it's small enough to do in a day or two. It is very hilly and there are lots of cobbles so would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Also you can't book taxis in advance and it can be tricky at rush hour to get any taxi. Also to note the train station is far from the centre. I would advise to arrive by coach if you land in Florence (tram to the main bus station and then a coach that drops you in the centre of Siena).
