The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town.
When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town. It was towards the end of 3 weeks driving around Kyushu and we were weary! While people come here for the Seven Hells, we found Beppu to be quite charming. Although quiet, we thought it had a lovely vibe and some busy restaurants to choose from in the evening. The hells are touristy and there are a couple I probably wouldn’t recommend but it’s what Beppu is known for. We booked 1 night in a 3-bed room with private bathroom.
We booked 1 night in a 3-bed room with private bathroom. The staff were very nice and accommodating, waiting for us when we didn't realise they have a closing time to check in. The main room and in-room bathroom were very spacious. Comfy beds, bathroom shower seem a little weak but had all necessary things such as fridge and table. Kettle in room but if you want to cook, there is a shared kitchen with the rest of the guest house. The only slight negative is that getting to the guesthouse from the station at night was dark, quiet, twisty turny with practically no one around so if alone could be a scary few minutes walk.Guest review byKai - 10.0

To be avoided on weekends! Way too expensive then... I'm traveling with a "digital nomad" so we stay in a city for 5-7 days at a time. Beppu is a great place to be for a week. Day trips to Yufuin, Oita. There is hiking. The food is amazing. I would recommend getting a place near the station. The hillside by the hells is too remote from restaurants etc.Guest review byikUnited States

But dinner looked poorly not a fine dining as I used to have at previous stay in Nikko. Yukata looked old made with low cost fabric. Breakfast looked almost the same as dinner I just had yesterday. The worst thing was that I had to pay 400 Yen per person for a cup of coffee. The hotel told me that coffee was not included. The staff was extraordinary nice, trying to help everywhere they could. Beautiful traditional rooms with tatami, everything spotless clean. We felt really special with all the amenities, even could wear a yukata around the hotel. It is near the main areal to visit hells of Beppu and the most onsen.
