Small, but perfectly formed.Fantastic boutique hotel in a brilliant location. We booked a superior family room, although there was just the two of us, knowing from previous trips to Japan that space is at a premium and for longer stays a bit more space makes a big difference. The breakfast, traditional Japanese style was one of the best we’ve ever had, simple delicious and beautifully presented. Last but not least the staff, welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of historic buildings and areas within the city.
Plenty of historic buildings and areas within the city. A great assortment of dining options. Including in and around Omicho Market. Well placed to explore the surrounding area (I chose to walk and use public transport, a hire car would have given even more options). A relaxed city. Kanazawa is incredibly beautiful and felt like an underrated gem when we went there, as there were virtually no other tourists and the city was very calm and quiet. Lots of things to do, see and explore, and it kind of gives off similar vibes to Kyoto (with the historical districts and the river flowing through the city) but without the crowds. We had an amazing time there and would definitely return. We mostly walked everywhere because every street was gorgeous to look at. I recommend to visit the Kanazawa Castle and the garden next to it, the historical chaya districts (there are multiple) and the Oyama Shrine grounds. I loved that you could walk around the whole of Kanazawa. There were so many interesting areas, good food and lots of history. It was a spacious town, with a mix of modern and old architecture. I absolutely loved Kanazawa - a lovely city but much smaller & therefore easier to get around than some of the bigger cities - and less crowded. So much to see & do, and we found we were able to walk to everything. Loved the old Samurai district & the Kenrokuen Garden is spectacular. Even the train station is a work of art.
