Matsuyama is a city with a lot to offer. From the stunning views from Matsuyama castle, to the history of Dogo Onsen. It has many hidden gems in the form of cafes, traditional craft and cultural experiences and is a good jumping off point to see the rest of Ehime/Shikoku.

The Best part about Matsuyama was where we stayed.

The Best part about Matsuyama was where we stayed. It was Ryokan Kominka Mitsuhama, and it was detailed by a true artist. You have 2 floors of space with the bedroom upstairs and a large living room downstairs. The living room is surrounded by 2 different mature and well lit Japanese gardens. One had many Koi swimming in the ponds. So lovely! It was in a quiet, low key neighborhood but just 2 blocks to the river and near a little working fisherman's bay. The boats were squid fisherman with lights strung on them because they fish at night with the lights to attract the squid. There were plenty of small local restaurants and bakeries. It was a respite from tourist crowds and off the beaten path.

After Tokyo which is overrun with tourists Matsuyama has a far more traditional feeling. You can visit a variety of interesting sites in an unrushed and uncrowded manner. It is far more representative of Japan as it is lived in away from the crowds.

Matsuyama City is a captivating blend of tradition and modernity, making it a top-tier destination. Dominated by the iconic Matsuyama Castle and historic Dogo Onsen, the city seamlessly merges its rich past with contemporary vibrancy. Exploring Matsuyama's charming streets reveals bustling markets, unique shops, and delightful cafes in arcades like Okaido and Gintengai. The city's culinary scene is a treat, offering a diverse range of local flavors and gourmet experiences. Matsuyama's commitment to the arts is showcased in the Botchan Karakuri Clock, a whimsical mechanical masterpiece. The city's warm hospitality and cultural richness create an unforgettable experience for every traveler. Really enjoyed Matsuyama and was sad to leave.

Really enjoyed Matsuyama and was sad to leave. The castle (with its chair lift up to it) was great. There are lots of options for shopping, eating and drinking and the whole area around Dogo Onsen is very nice.

The location of the hotel is just amazing. Right next to Okaido station and a beautiful shopping street, full of shops and restaurants. The ropeway to Matsuyama castle is also a short walk away. The hotel is stylish, the staff were really helpful and the ofuro is a nice bonus.

The hotel was easy to find on the streetcar route, close to Okkaido stop, right across the road from excellent shopping and restaurants, and a short walk to the cablecar up to the castle. Breakfast included a very good selection of western and Japanese breakfast options.
