We stayed for two nights and it was the best place we stayed at on our month long trip to Japan. as soon as we arrived, we felt welcomed and so well taken care of. the food was just beyond amazing, the building is so cool, the surrounding area is gorgeous, the staff is so personable, the sauna amazing, and we got to spend some time with the adorable rescue cats. this place is worth the trip out to Shikoku alone, but it's also very close to a lot of interesting places to see like the Iya valley vine bridge, Oboke gorge, a yokai museum, beautiful nature, onsens and more. we will most definitely be back :)

Booked this hotel for the location in the iya valley and the onsen. It is just a 3min drive from the Iya valley vine bridge. But the hotel itself is a destination worth visiting itself. The onsen were superb. Well maintained with a quaint funicular train up the hill to the open air onsen that had great views of the mountains. Food was good quality. I particularly liked the multiple methods of preparing the ayu (river fish). The room itself was a very comfortable and quite newly renovated tatami room with all the typical ryokan amenities. Staff were not just polite but friendly and welcoming. English and Mandarin both spoken here - so that is very helpful for travelers.

This was one of my favourite accommodations during my trip to Japan. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, and big bonus that they even have their own bistro/restaurant within the guest house. We ate there twice (once lunch, once dinner) out of convenience, and because after 6pm not a lot of restaurants are open in Miyoshi. The menu was extensive and featured a lot of gibier / game dishes which this area is famous for (we enjoyed deer and wild boar). The prices are also quite fair and the portions large. The room was very comfortable (tatami room), and it's a less than 5min walk from the train station, from where you can easily travel down towards Iya Valley / Kochi, and back towards Okayama to catch a Shinkansen.

A small town set in a valley surrounded by steep forested...

A small town set in a valley surrounded by steep forested mountains and a majestic river Gateway to Iya Valley and other stunning sights. No shortage of top class food options and bars (particularly Casual Bar for great fun and karaoke and Cafe Addcolor). And the locals are some of the very nicest and generous people I have met. Can easily spend days just walking around the town and hidden laneways to shrines and spectacular scenery. I will definitely come back.

Great area and plenty to see, a car is a must to get around...

Great area and plenty to see, a car is a must to get around so you can get to all the places out of the way. It was winter so we were restricted on walks and things to visit. Love to go back in the Spring or the Fall to experience a whole new world

To say the Iya valley is beautiful would be an...

To say the Iya valley is beautiful would be an understatement. The vine bridges, the scarecrow village and gorges are pretty much all you'll hear about and for good reason. They're the main attraction and the reason people go. It's all about the nature and a handful of curiosities like the Yokai museum. While not the tourist powerhouse of big cities like Kyoto, it does kind of live off of its "in the know" tourists. A new generation of younger entrepreneurs are trying to revitalize the area and transform it into something more in line with their modern sensibilities. Travel is not easy and requires a lot of planning and preparation. Buses are extremely rare and trains as well. Bad weather can throw a wrench into your plans and mess up everything. Renting a car almost a must in order to visit the more far away spots, but a strong and experienced cyclists could probably do it - maybe. Those hills and mountains aren't always easy! And those trucks get a bit scary. I stayed in Ikeda-cho, one of the bigger areas of Miyoshi city but still a bit of a one horse town. But one thing is has going for it is that you can follow the Yoshino river for an 80km ride into Tokushima city. On a nice day, it's one of the best bike rides you could do.

It's just a lovely area that lives up to it's reputation.

It's just a lovely area that lives up to it's reputation. Amazing views, good food to be had, nice places to stay and walks to be had. Plus they need the support! So f you're in Shikoku I couldn't recommend it more!

The accommodation is just 2min on foot from Awaikeda Station. Room and facilities have been very clean. The Japanese style room was very spacious and comfortable. In the front / basement is a restaurant where you can have dinner. The restaurant serves mainly regional game. It's delicious. The accommodation can prepare a sandwich for breakfast which one picks up from the fridge in the morning. However, given the price, breakfast from a convenience store may be a good alternative.

This is what you can call a hidden gem! Great location, beautifully refurbished Japanese style rooms including a bath/shower and sitting space “with a view” of the surroundings. Both the inside and outside onsen are nice and clean. The welcoming and all over service of the staff is warm and very friendly. We fully enjoyed the served meals, all super tasty, nicely presented and of course all homemade!

The food was the stand out. So glad that we chose this Ryokan. Location is 5 min walk to the Vine Bridge. Ample parking for guests. We were not used to Japanese style accommodation, but so glad we chose it. Make sure you take the option with breakfast and dinner. You will not regret it!!
