It isn’t a typical tourist destination from my understanding but the gardens by night are absolutely stunning. The casual is also beautiful and I’m sad to have missed the pottery class. Food and bars also exceptional - everybody is particularly friendly, and perhaps less used to accommodating tourists. Coffee: Empire coffee roasters. Friendly service and outstanding coffee. Food: Hidaya Yanigamachi. Grill your own delicious meat. Drink: ichigin. Super friendly and will involve you in conversations even if you don’t speak Japanese.

Okayama is a great city to stay in if you want to visit nearby places like Hiroshima and Naoshima. The hotel is great, convenient, and comfortable. Close enough to the main transit hub -- I would stay here again.

We chose Okayama as a base for trips in central Japan...

We chose Okayama as a base for trips in central Japan because it is a stop on the shinkensen line. We bought a 7 day Sanyo-Sanin pass for about $150 and took day trips to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Naoshima (art island), Onomichi, Inujima, and Takahachi. Okayama itself is a charming modern city. Just about everyone rides a bike. Because it is not a tourist hub prices very reasonable. $500 for a week in a nice hotel with free breakfast, adult happy hour drinks at night, and an onsen. Restaurants were very reasonable. $15 will get you all you can eat and drink at a sushi restaurant. $10 for the best tonkatsu dinner outside of Tokyo. Although the city was flattened during WWII, some nice attractions remain. The Korakuen gardens are beautiful and overlook the Okayama castle. Kurashiki is 15 minutes away with its historic district built around a canal.

as always across Japan the transport possibilities are endless, we liked the Korakuen garden and it was easy to get to from the station great value and visually stunning. The castle is a contemporary rebuild of a feudal castle rebuilt after destruction during wartime. It is interactive and interesting, we especially liked dressing up as a feudal lord, but you have to put your name down for a 30 minute session, great fun though.

Definitely go to the gardens by the palace they are beautiful. We wish we had more time in the city to explore but loved the proximity of Kurashiki and the islands for art appreciation Naoshima & Teshima.

A great place to base yourself instead of keep moving...

A great place to base yourself instead of keep moving location. A day in Okayama is probably enough but there are so many other places easily accessible from there. I went to Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Onomichi, Fukuyama, Kurashiki and Bitchu Matsuyama before moving on but regretted leaving as so many more places easily reachable from there and Okayama is a nice place to return to at the end of the day. The station is big but not confusing so you don’t end up spending half an hour trying escape like some stations in Japan!

We loved our stay at Ensoh. It is a lovely place, very quiet, comfortable and nice to have some space after a couple of weeks in hotels and ryokans. We stayed four nights and used it as a base while we visited Naoshima (the electric bikes are fantastic for getting to the port and riding round the island) and Hiroshima as well as the local area. Pick up and drop off from the train or bus from Okayama by the hosts ( as well as the bikes) make it very accessible. Well worth the detour from the main tourist trail!!

Whilst the hotel is a bit away from the main station, it is right near the main tourist attractions of Okayama. Getting around is easy with a tram/trolley car right out front. There are many eating options and the local closed in shopping street is only about 150metres away. It is a good basic hotel but had the worst sound deadening of our trip....we were awake at 6am both mornings with doors slamming and people thumping around....the walls are thin!

the hotel is near okayama station with silent enviornment for sleep. There is a shop at 1st floor in case of any groceries, essentials, drinks and food needed. Meanwhile, the breakfast provided by the hotel was good and convenient, I apologize forgetting return the tray during my stay, appreciate if you can provide a notice to me when check in.

The hotel is in a convenient location between the yrain station and beautiful Koraku-en Gardens. We also used Okayama as base to visit Hiroshima, only some 40 minutes by Shinkansen. The room was comfortable and a good size. The Japanese buffet breakfast was good.

The hotel is located close to Okayama Station and the centre of the city. It was easy to get around from our Hotel. The staff are great and caring. I was so happy with Pur stay that I booked Mitsui Garden Hotels for my return trip to Horishima and Tokyo.
