This place is truly the best place to stay. Sapiens Weligama is nestled in stunning natural surroundings, offering complete tranquility while still being close to the city. We initially planned a short stay but ended up staying for two months because, after just one hour, it already felt like home. The staff are incredibly welcoming and kind—genuinely some of the warmest people you can imagine. From the manager to the kitchen staff and those who keep everything spotless, they make you feel like family because they truly care about your well-being. This isn’t just a hotel—it’s a home in paradise. The WiFi is excellent, the beds are comfortable, and the pool with its river view is absolutely breathtaking. I have nothing but praise for this amazing place! We will miss you so much, Menoj, Janith, Kalhadi, Arincini, Kavin, and Hasha (sorry if we misspelled your names! 😄). Everything, from the beginning the stuff was super kind and helpful, location is absolutely stunning, the hotel is just at the beach and waves are coming so close to hotel's restaurant. Hotel has its private beach so it's almost empty, just sometimes some people cross the beach but there are not really other hotels around , especially at the beach. He had really great relax there and regretted that we needed to leave this magical place. Food was delicious and homemade coconut ice creams in real coconut stole my heart and I've never had ice cream like this again in any place! You can really relax in silence at this place also because there is no children's facilities and it's like a "wild" and silent area. This place is really like in heaven! I wish I can come back there soon!

Lion's Rest had an awesome location, the beach was literally only a 2 min walk, it was really nice to just sit and enjoy the sundown. The room was very nice and clean, with an AC - this was highly appreciated on some days during our stay. The staff was the loveliest, very accommodating and helpful with any request. The breakfast selection is great, as well as the rest of the menu. This was a great stay at the end of our trip - chill, friendly and comfortable. No notes :)

We were there 4 nights during off season.

We were there 4 nights during off season. There is not much to do there in July. Especially with kids. Since the sea was to rough to swim in! Lots of wind and felt a bit like a ghost town to us. Every restaurant we went to we were the only ones! I think 2 nights would have been more than enough

Fortunately the place is not in the city of Wellgama which is bery busy, crowdy and noisy city. We resigned from spending more time in the city after 1h walk trying to find a nice area like caffees/restaurants or local small shops where you can buy some hand made staff etc.

Weligama is an absolute gem for travelers! Whether you're chasing waves or simply looking for a peaceful escape, this place has it all. The beach is fantastic for surfing, with great waves for both beginners and pros, while also offering calm spots perfect for relaxation. The sunrises and sunsets here are truly breathtaking, making every moment by the ocean magical. The town itself is warm and welcoming, with friendly locals, great food, and a laid-back vibe. The only minor downside is the occasional plastic waste, but with more awareness and local efforts, this paradise can be even better. If you want to learn to surf it’s a great place.

If you want to learn to surf it’s a great place. But (compared to other places in SL) it’s pretty dull. Half the beach is a litter-strewn dump rest is tolerable if you’re surfing. Precious little else to do.

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Shan Star! Shan couldn't have been more helpful, kind and accommodating. He went the extra mile to make sure we were happy, and just generally offered an outstanding service. This accommodation is unbeatable on price, and is the best value for money hotel we stayed in while visiting Sri Lanka. The breakfast was also great, with delicious fruit picked from the garden itself! Shan organised a great snorkelling excursion for us, which was fantastic too. I couldn't recommend this place enough!

the villa is in a great location close to the beach and weligama centre. There is a kitchen with fridge and basic cooking facilities. the bathroom has lovely hot showers. all the windows have fly screens and mosquito proof. the villa has fans and is cool and not requiring air conditioning. The villa is located in a quiet alleyway a few metres between the beach and matara road. it is also close to some great restaurants that serve sri lankan and western meals. The owner is a lovely honourable and helpful man of great integrity.

We had an amazing stay at water gate resort. Next to the amazing room and location the family was very warm and welcoming. We have been in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and this has been the most special stay for us. We spent most of our time in Weligama with the family, they took us to the beach, we had dinner together and played many games. If you are looking for an authentic experience with the kindest people and family we recommend this place a 100%

This was the best thing about our stay in Sri Lanka, the excellent management and service, the variety of entertainment facilities, the hotel knew we were on our honeymoon and prepared a complimentary dessert and decorated with rose petals. The beach is right downstairs, the pool is heated and never cold at night, and the restaurant has the best quality food in the area.
