We had booked the Norway in a Nutshell route from Oslo to Bergen and our friends had recommended we break up the journey and stay the night in Gudvangen and I am so glad we did! It was the most beautiful town right in the heart of a fjord - the views were breathtaking and as not many people stayed the night like we did, we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We didn't stay long enough to participate in any of the activities offered the next morning (kayaking, hiking or a visit to the viking museum) but I don't think you need to stay any longer than two nights. I highly recommend that you stay at least one night in Gudvangen if you are travelling through it

My husband I ended up in Gudvangen because we could not find a hotel room in Flåm. It turned out that we were really lucky - Gudvangen is really beautiful, and less touristy than Flåm. Our budget hotel was much better than I expected, the local seafood restaurant was great, and the Viking village was a very interesting place to visit.

I flew into Bergen and took the double decker Bus (2.5 Hrs scenic journey) to Gudvangen via Voss. The Bergen to Oslo Train via Myrdal and Flam is an alternative means of travel. A peaceful, quiet area at the head of the Nærøyfjord. Less commercial than the nearby Flam but is only 25mins by regular shuttle bus. The only slight downside for me as an ardent cyclist; was that as I was there in April; the Bike hire company was closed until May!

Easy and pleasant hike along the old road to Bakka.

Easy and pleasant hike along the old road to Bakka. An hour there and an hour back. I caught the Lady Elisabeth ferry to Flam and had it all to myself. The Monday 8.30am ferry in the off season is a winner! I noticed that the 9.30am catamaran was much busier when it arrived in Flam around 20 minutes after my boat. Obviously a shorter but more popular journey.

We read great reviews about the Viking Village - honestly I would give it a miss. I wish we had done kayaking instead of the village that morning, waste of time and money. I love museums, and cultural/heritage ones especially. But this one was disappointing. Limited food options in town and be aware the shuttle bus back to Flam DOES sell out! Book tickets early!

It's a nice and calm town. The Vikings museum is a must-have to visit. You can go kayaking or on a trip on a ferry. You can also go hiking or enjoy the beauty of nature. There is a small grocery store available with all the essential things.

It is a wonderful place on the fjord with views you will never forget. The house is big enough and has everything you need. The host is accommodating and lives nearby, so you can always ask for help. There is a motor boat available at a highly fair price. Very quiet place with scenic views and one of the greatest hikes within walking distance. You can also use sauna and BBQ. The parking is free right near the house.

This was a great campsite. We hired one of the log cabins. They were brilliant. The site was very clean and tidy and all the facilities were perfect. All the staff were extremely friendly. The site is located a short walk from Gudvangen and the bus stop is directly outside the campsite. I would highly recommend this property

Quiet and peaceful stay. A good alternative to staying in Flam, if you are taking the cruise. The place is beautiful. There's free space for parking and also a washer for use (outside the apartment). Our unit is up a short flight of stairs and double storey, with two bathrooms. Adequate bed for 9 of us (5kids).

Nice location to sleep in if you want to visit a part of Sognefjord. The room was big and we had also our private terrace and parking area. There are two resturants nearby, a shop, the viking village and the point of departure of the cruise on the fjord.
