I found Kaka Point had a lovely peaceful community vibe.
I found Kaka Point had a lovely peaceful community vibe. The weather turned during my short stay there, but that didn't spoil my walk out to the lighthouse at Nugget Point. It was extremely windy with very rough seas, which made me appreciate how hard shipping must have been back in the day.

Beautiful spot in the Catlins. Lovely beach and forest walk. A stones throw throw from the Nugget Point Lighthouse and Roaring Bay penguin hide. Great affordable accommodation at Nugget View Kaka Point Motel and celiac friendly dinner at The Point Restaurant and Bar.

Kaka point is a perfect base for visiting the Catlins if you...
Kaka point is a perfect base for visiting the Catlins if you have a week because then you can make day trips to the many waterfalls, beaches, lighthouses and historical sites without rushing or getting exhausted. Kaka point itself is peaceful and wildly beautiful at this time of year but you need to go prepared as there is no proper store and only one eating venue which is quite expensive.

The whole of the Catlins is a treat for locals and international travellers alike. Be captivated by the beauty of the landscape and wildlife, while soaking up the quaint, sleepy town feel of Kaka Point. New Zealand has wonderful wildlife and environmental protection laws for native flora and fauna. If you're looking for an ethical way to see animals in nature, this is the way to do it. Please respect the laws and rules about Interacting with any animals or scenery - this ensures it is a place to treasure for years to come.

A lovely beach with a cafe/shop/restaurant so ideal for families. Easy to reach nugget point from there. Bear in mind it’s at the eastern end of the Catlins so if you want to explore places further west, eg Curio Bay, you will have quite a drive. On the other hand Balclutha is only a 15 min drive which is handy for stores and food shopping.

Beautiful location and very close to Nugget Point Lighthouse...
Beautiful location and very close to Nugget Point Lighthouse which is a must see for all travellers. Would have liked to stay longer and try swimming. The beaches looked very inviting. Clifftop views around the lighthouse are breathtaking

Right on the beach, right across a very quiet road and the prettiest beach in the Catlins (in our opinion) is right there, we met sea lions and saw an orca pod just round the corner from kaka point. Totally spotless, extra little touches, the bed was extremely comfortable and Laura couldn’t do enough for us, she was brilliant.

Great location and the unit was immaculate and had a few unexpected extras - like frozen bread and spreads in the fridge. Before arrival the hosts were kind enough to advise that the only cafe restaurant in Kaka Point was closed on a Monday and Tuesday so best to bring own food. Great location and unit was great.

Coming to Kaka Point for the second time, I didn't hesitate to choose this apartment again. It was still as warm and clean as before. The next morning, I met the landlord and had a brief chat. He was also a gentle and friendly person. It's undoubtedly the top choice for accommodation in Kaka Point.

Kaka Point is a beautiful spot. From the veranda we had a view of the sea.
Food at the Point cafe was very nice. We were told at the Penguin Centre in Dunedin today that at Nugget Point there is now only 1 pair of the rare yellow eyed penguins, so the chance of seeing one there is remote.
