The suspension bridge over the Hokitika gorge hike was most impressive. While we didn’t make it all the way down to the 2nd bridge (which was apparently closed for repairs) we were happy with the opportunity to still across the first bridge and get some great pics. The Tree Top walk was rather —meh— not sure it was worth the cost of admission; my sister was seriously freaked out by the heights of the walkway so she didn’t enjoy it too much. However, the cafe there is quite good!

The word "Retreat" in the title gave me the expectation of luxurious accomodation with fully contained rooms, spas etc. None of that, which was disappointing. A small private holiday park would cover it better.

We had a larger group of 4 families of different sizes, the villa and cabin options fitted with our agenda and stay perfectly. We did a lot of driving and exploring during the day and cooked at home / played games in the evening. It was a lot of fun.

it was a good location for sightseeing further around the area and for exploring on foot or bike. Be aware of the insects though and make sure you have repellent with you. The 'town' itself is very quiet. I would strongly recommend staying at the Hotel Theatre Royal. Clean, comfortable, interesting, great staff and good food.

We came to Kumara specifically to stay at the Greenstone Retreat.....travelling the South Island, on the list was Fish n Chips on the Beach by the famous 'Hokitika' Sign to watch the sunset!!! We did this, and Kumara was just a skip away to stay.

Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara...

Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara Historic Cottage is a backpackers with basic yet comfortable accommodation that fits the cost which was very reasonable. Comfortable beds and the living room was OK for four of us - would be cramped with a full quota of guests. Kitchen basic. No separate toilet. If you want less basic accommodation, the pub has rooms available. Main grizzle was the lack of TV channels available - one channel (Prime) is no choice and when it is pouring outside there is very little to do in Kumara! On the bright side, the pub opens at 4:00pm in the afternoon and the coffee, beer, and meals are good. One real bonus is the safe storage of your bike in a locked shed in which you can recharge your battery if you have an ebike. If a number of ebikes need to recharge, some may have to wait their turn so it pays to connect up - if you can - when you arrive.

Stunning Gardens! The lantern lights that lit up in the evenings around the gardens was beautiful. Our 11yr old always escaped in the Den to play darts. Great selection of board games, ring toss & a trampoline kept him busy which was great. The Wifi coverage was 💯 times better than the fancy 5 star hotels 😊

Being a historic cottage, comfort and interior was as expected. Food at the Hotel was excellent. My Family from Germany commented particularly how impressed they were by their meals. Hotel was perfect place to stay to continue our journey through Arthur's Pass next day.

Super easy location as it was right beside the Westcoast Wilderness trail which we were biking. Lovely old cottage, peaceful location. Friendly host who was welcoming in her emails and had good suggestions for what to do in Kumara.

Great old world feel to the hotel. Staff were very freindly, approachable and added to the experiance. The history of the town is fantastic and is known by staff.

We enjoyed sitting in the sun on the verandah followed by a lovely dinner in the restaurant. Delicious food. Great history around the hotel and neighborhood.
