The heavy rain precluded too much driving around, but...

The heavy rain precluded too much driving around, but locating historical places was rewarding earlier on., With Labour Day celebrations, it meant most people were at home celebrating a day off (which was good) but not so much to participate in through the day. However a very good meal was enjoyed at Star and Garter down the road and I would thoroughly recommend visiting there.

I loved the Victorian quarter and the Steam Punk museum.

I loved the Victorian quarter and the Steam Punk museum. But my favorite was seeing the blue penguins arriving on the shore at the Penguin Sanctuary at the end of the wharf. Totally worth paying for premium seats.

We only stayed one night and did a whirwind tour. Steampunk to brewery to little blue penguins. Tees Street Cafe for breakfast and then we were off. I loved the quirkiness and historical charm and would like to go back. I think 2-3 nights would be more fun. Even 4 would be good. Everything close to each other though so still worth it for even 1 night. Magical!

the train, the old town, the seals the penguins.

the train, the old town, the seals the penguins. The Craftwork pub, the robot shop, the criterion, the kids playground, the farmers market...all doable in a weekend and all within easy walking distance. and a drive to Kakanui is worth it too

Not much to do in Oamaru, will recommend visiting the quaint...

Not much to do in Oamaru, will recommend visiting the quaint museums, Oamaru heritage museum (pay/donate as you wish) and steampunk museum (NZD$15/pax). both were interactive and we enjoyed it with the helpful stuff. the day was a cloudy and rainy so we opted out of visiting the penguins - they have a live youtube stream of the penguins coming home which we watch. We did visit the penguins tour during the day, which was open to public and saw some fur seals relaxing. To watch the penguins coming home, it's NZD$45 per pax, which we thought was a little expensive. + the weather being bad, we decided to watch them online instead.

we had a national bird show for 4 days to attend found some really nice eating places with great service the tearooms on the main street very very good there was alot of north island bird member there they agreed tearooms that carter for the bus serv ice greast place to relax with coffee and eats

This backpackers was 100% the nicest place I’ve stayed in New Zealand. It was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and welcoming. The lounge areas were warm, clean and cosy and it genuinely felt like a home away from home. This property is an absolute credit to the owners for the care and attention to detail they put into the place. I cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough. Thank you! Also loved the way the beds were made and the cute penguin theme ☺️

Thanks to the hospitable and friendly staff it's been for me the very best accommodation in New Zealand. I was very greatful to them even for not being so strict with checking out times, free left luggage room and so on. And Oamaru itself - you must visit the town to understand the atmosphere. Would love to come once again.

Great room. Loved the decoration. Did not expect that in Oamaru. Beautiful place to stay. We had our breakfast included but unfortunately it starts at 8 and we left each day at 7.30. But the hotel was so accommodating that they brought us a tray of cereal, yogurt and fruit to have for breakfast in our room.

Very friendly host, lovely wee extra touches which the grandchildren really enjoyed. The bed was beautifully comfortable and snuggly. We stayed over in Oamaru specifically to go see the penguins and we were offered nice warm blankets to take with us which were greatly appreciated.
