The cottage is beautifully decorated, and the food was fabulous. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony after the park visitors had all left for the day, drinking a glass of wine and listening to the sound of the waterfalls.

The location: I specifically chose a place to stay that didn't involve lots of driving down narrow roads. This was barely a couple of km from the main ring road. Access to the property: This was via a few steps from the road. The police personnel beneath the apartment even charged my phone for me when I'd run out of charge on arrival and couldn't remember the apartment number. The 'feel' of the apartment: Cosy but functional and with nice views in both directions looking out over the Madeiran landscape. The balcony: Perfect for breakfasts and suppers. Supermarkets: A well stocked supermarket was less than a five minute walk from the apartment.

Breathtaking ocean and mountain views, calm area, delicious...

Breathtaking ocean and mountain views, calm area, delicious food and big portions, thanks to Lobosonda tour in Calheta we got to see a pod of cute dolphins. Calheta is a good place to stay in Madeira, because it’s calm and most sights are easily reachable by car.

This is a great location to visit the rest of the Island.

This is a great location to visit the rest of the Island. You need a hire car here and be willing to drive around the Island. It is too far with main highways to be able to walk to Calheta beach. If you do hire a car, make sure you go for full Insurance as minor scratches and scraps to your hire vehicle are very likely on this Island, even if not by you. If you don't fancy driving here, be sure to book into accomodation with meals included.

Lovely place, great sea view, fantastic gardens, sunny and...

Lovely place, great sea view, fantastic gardens, sunny and great sunsets. Close to the hiking areas of Rabacal and to the beach places of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar. We also loved Joe`s Bar in Jardim do Mar and Pukiki in Estreito da Calheta.

Estreito da Calheta is very quiet and close to some gorgeous...

Estreito da Calheta is very quiet and close to some gorgeous parts of the island- Jardim de Mar, Paul de Mar and Rabacal, but there’s not much in Estreito de Calheta itself. Also the roads are very steep, so probably a bit nerve-wracking for any inexperienced drivers. We had great day trips to Ponto Pargo, Jardim de Mar, Paul de Mar, Porto Moniz and Seixal. All very accessible from Estreito da Calheta. Calheta is nice- a long promenade and a man-made sandy beach, but very busy, so not our cup of tea. We did go to the beach one evening, our kids loved the play park and there was a lovely little rum bar close by for coffee or drinks.
