Nothing below comfort inn, etc. standards, but I booked Hampton Inn because past experience showed me they were a cut above. I was disappointed. this Hampton was no better than the average Comfort Inn , Holiday Inn express, etc.
Breakfast heated items were lukewarm the first two days, then somebody, not me, complained and the last two days the food was warmer-not hot- but much warmer. Room housekeeping was poor. I think they hotel had hired several summer vacation high school students and were just being trained. If so that is OK. It is a good thing to hire summertime students, but if this cleaning was from permanent staff then they need to be better managed. Waste baskets seldom emptied, Toilet paper roller was empty two days. I finally put the paper on the roller myself. Floor didn't appear to be vacuumed often, nearly empty cups of cold coffee were never disposed of. Generally not up to expectations for a Hampton Inn. Maybe because it is now owned by Hilton, but quality has deteriorated from previous Hampton Inn stays.

Middlebury is a quaint smaller town with a lot of country charm. You can hear the horses hooves on the road when it is quiet as the Amish horse and buggies go by. Plus you are not that far from Shipshewana if you want to go there and explore.

We were planning on staying at the Essenhaus Inn, but they were full up because it was a Notre Dame football home game weekend. So we stayed at the Hampton Inn nearby and ate and shopped on the Essenhaus grounds.
We found a mom and pop cider mill, "Miller's Cider Mill," with homemade fresh cider and beautiful surroundings. We will definitely go there again!

Lots of great shops, places to eat, and things to do!
We loved the shops downtown and The Barn Door north of town. We also enjoyed the Creamery on Main for lattes and pretzels, and the Village Inn Restaurant had great burgers. Clothesline Creations quilt shop was so welcoming and helpful with my quilting needs. Krider’s World Fair Gardens was fun and nice refreshing fall walk! The Essenhaus shops, restaurant, and Inn were lovely and quaint.

Middlebury is a small town in the Amish part of Northern Indiana. Essenhaus Inn and Conference center is adjacent to a large restaurant and gift shop. There are several very nice gift shops on the same property, as well as a couple of paths that are accessible from the hotel that accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and even an Amish horse and buggy ride. One even has a small, covered bridge that some local boys were fishing from.
Since we only stayed one night, we did not experience much in the area, but did go over to see Krider's World's Fair Garden, about 5-10 minutes from the hotel, and the grounds were lovely and rustic.
The Amish town of Shipshewana is only a few minutes' drive from Middlebury, and it has lots of amenities and shops. There are several hotels, and even a hotel with a dinner theater. The town also has a weekly flea market.
If you are looking for a quiet, clean, quaint get-away, the Middlebury area might just be the place for you!

Breakfast was great. The hotel was clean and the staff was very nice. The shops had a lot to offer. The restaurant was very busy as usual, and the food was good. We also didn't have to wait at all because the front desk staff can make you a reservation. The free cookies and coffee/hot chocolate were a nice little bonus. The grounds are gorgeous and very well maintained. We had a lovely time.

The grounds and landscaping are absolutely beautiful. The decor is fitting to the area. Every area was very clean. The balcony is a wonderful amenity. The breakfast exceeded expectations - gravy and egg casserole were very good & better than you'd find at other hotel breakfasts. Would definitely stay here again!

Overall the Hotel and facilities were very clean. My room had a balcony with it that overlooked the pond and was very peaceful. Wish we could’ve stayed longer.
