This was a divine place to stay. The resort is split into several houses with rooms on ground level and first floor. The rooms on the first floor have high wooden ceilings. The AC is very good and silent. WIFI is also fine. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. You live on a hillside opposite to the volcano and have the volcano in full view. The view changes all the time due to the weather. You can spend hours on the balcony. This is proper rain forrest and it rains daily. Half the experience of living here is walking the hotel grounds either by day or in the evenings carrying a flashlight. There are all kinds of critters to see. There are many trails to explore. There are always hummingbirds buzzing around and toucans visit from time to time. After a week you will know the different birds by their calls. We visited in late august and can highly recommend coming in the rainy season. Everything is green and fresh and there are flowers everywhere. You also avoid the crowds. The hotel was only about 20% booked which gives the visit a very private and exclusive touch. The nearby Mistico park was also not overrun. The same goes for the volcano trails. You pay by credit card everywhere. You can let all tours and extra costs go to the room and just pay a total at the end of the stay. Just bring cash for tips. We came for nature experiences and didn't use the pool, bar or the spa. We can recommend the Caño Negro and the Coffee & Cocoa tours.

Offering an outdoor pool, Hotel La Guaria Inn & Suites is located in Alajuela, just a 5-minute drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport. The staff, location, airport shuttle and pool were excellent. The breakfast was basic but lovely. I am a smoker and was pleased they supplied a designated smoking area. I had an early flight and had to leave at 6am so the breakfast was set up early. The wifi was great and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The park, shops and restaurants are close by.
