We are a mother and daughter travelling on our own, we were a little nervous about coming to Srinagar. There was no need to be nervous, the Mascot the owners and staff looked after us so well, we actually felt safer here than anywhere else we had travelled and it’s became our favourite destination. The mascot houseboats are beautiful and on the best lake, facing towards the mountains, the beds were comfortable and everything was very clean. The staff were amazing, our waiters Azard and Nazir were on hand always and took such good care of us. The chef was also lovely and his food was delicious, a choice in meal size would be good though, the meals were huge and we were only able to eat half of what was put on the table. The staff organised a three hour shikara ride to Dal Lake with delicious tea and cakes for our journey. We loved the floating markets, watching the day-to-day life of the locals and we got some amazing photos. They also organise a day trip to and we went up in the gondolas, also an unforgettable experience. We threw food for the Eagles from the top of the houseboat which was also very special. The whole experience was amazing, I think one of the most lovely things was how friendly the locals were, people waved smiled at us everywhere we went. When we return to India, staying here again will be on the top of our list.

I had pre-booked my first night in India. I was looking for a nice houseboat which could provide peace and quiet, genuine Kashmir food and an astonishing view — all this on a budget. My research led me to Kings Houseboats: Spot on! My plan was to stay a night or two meanwhile I was looking for the right place to stay but when I arrived at the houseboat and I saw my room, I knew I found the right place! When you are lying down on your pillow looking out through the wide side windows and you see the amazing lotus fields spreading out until the misty mountains of the Himalayan — this is life! See pictures taken from my double bed and from the front deck. Ask for Master cabin: Room 007. When I took a rickshaw (100 rubies — electric rickshaw) downtown to Dal lake and I saw the houseboats all stuck together and the shikara driving around like crazy, I really understood that I made the right decision! The Dunoo family will take care of you. This is a well-respected family, with the heart on the right place! They will try to make the best for you during your stay AND without any hidden plans. The awe-inspiring father will treat you like a son and accommodate all your needs. The mother will spoil you with excellent Kashmir food. Beautiful location, peaceful and traditional experience. Away from the Main Street which added an additional peace. Floating markets a must see. Highly recommend this stay when visiting Kashmir. Lovely heated rooms, hot shower and ample bedding for the Winter weather.

So, this houseboat is on Nigeen Lake and not on Dal Lake and that is the beauty of it. As most houseboats on Dal Lake don't have windows facing the lake but the ones on Nigeen Lake do (the ones on Dal lake are parked vertically so the entrance door of the boat faces the lake) which is quite a major difference. Another plus point is this lake is more peaceful with clearer waters. The hospitality of the person hosting us - 'Mehraaj' was amazing - he was friendly, cordial, and always welcoming. These are things you sense first when you come to a new place. This is what makes you feel at home while still brewing with the excitement of new things. This boat is perfect when you have 2 families as the boat has 2 rooms only which can be occupied by your family and hence the whole houseboat becomes your private space. The price of a meal is INR 400/person which looks high at the outset but then you pay for the quality of the food so justified. We stayed for one night but should have stayed for at least 2/3 nights as it is an awesome experience living on a houseboat. Highly recommended if you are visiting Srinagar.

We were looking for a clean, calm, quiet, non-smoking, non-drinking place to stay. And we found it here! We loved much natural light through windows (I don't feel comfortable in rooms without windows and I am sure that many foreigners feel like me.) We kept the windows open and enjoyed the clean and fresh air. The environment is so quiet, that most of the time we could enjoy the eagles' voice. A mosque is nearby, you can listen to their prayers, too. We didn't mind it at all. The location is not central, but if you are looking for a calm and peaceful stay, you can find it here, and can reach sights easily. We rented a bike for transportation during our holiday. No smoking and no alcohol is our basic lifestyle and we are happy, that we could find a place where we could avoid smoking and drinking people. Both the room and bathroom were spacious and very clean. We liked the nice interiors and simple decoration. The bed was comfortable with a special mattress. As a guest in Moonshine Homestay you become a part of a loving and caring family. We got much help, even before our arrival. Thank you for all recommendations and advice. We hope we can go back soon.
