Rooms are quiet and minimalist with great water pressure, reliable fast Wi-Fi, plenty of bedside outlets, and strong AC/heat. The bed and linens meet Western comfort standards. Breakfast can be chosen Chinese or Western—I tried both during my stay and each was fresh, well-presented, and generous (fresh juice and good coffee/tea included). Staff were proactive and friendly, arranged luggage pickup from the city gate, and communicated smoothly in English. The location is perfect for walking the lanes yet peaceful once inside the courtyard. Tips for Western travelers: cars can’t enter the old town, so message the hotel for pickup; wear comfortable shoes; and leave time to simply enjoy the courtyard—part heritage museum, part modern gallery. A flawless stay.

I really made the right choice with this homestay in Pingyao! The location is absolutely a hidden gem—just a two-minute walk gets you to Rishengchang Bank, so there’s no need to get up early to soak in the Jin merchant culture. It’s super convenient to head back for a break after visiting the attractions. What’s more, the surrounding area is bustling with life. When you stroll out in the evening, the lanterns light up, and old shops and street food stalls are right in front of you, full of that lively, authentic vibe. No need to hunt for places to eat; just step into any spot, and it’s sure to be delicious. The biggest surprise, though, is the service here—they truly take care of every little detail. When I checked in, the owner warmly introduced local attractions, even telling me which shop has the most authentic Pingyao beef and the best time to visit Rishengchang to avoid crowds. That kind of thoughtful care makes the whole trip feel so warm. I’ll definitely stay here again when I come back to Pingyao. Great location, amazing atmosphere, and service that’s second to none—highly recommended!

Shanxi Merchant Mansion is ideaal gelegen in de wijk Pingyao Ancient City in Pingyao, en bevindt zich op 4 minuten lopen van Rishengchang Former Bank, 400 meter van Pingyao Ancient City Ticket Office... Everything, especially the staff and the location. They picked us up and dropped us off at the train station. The hotel was clean and in the heart of the city. I would recommend it to a friend.

JW Marriott Hotel Taiyuan ligt in Taiyuan, op 4,2 km van Shanxi University, en biedt uitzicht op de stad. We travelled in a group of 3 pax and requested for an additional bed; we were very happy to see this already arranged by the time we checked in after a long flight and given an upgrade to the executive size. Room was clean, spacious and bedding comfortable with a Nespresso machine in the room. We also enjoyed the diverse spread at breakfast - with lots of local fare and a good balance of non- local to choose from. We also appreciated the amazing speed of the staff who responded to our requests with friendliness and alacrity - the concierge desk, the bellboys and the ladies at the breakfast counters were very helpful during our stay. Highly recommended for a comfortable stay in Taiyuan

Yuncheng Yunxi Furusato-Banma Resort ligt in Yuncheng, op 27 km van Yuncheng North Railway Station, en biedt accommodatie met een buitenzwembad, gratis privéparkeren, een fitnesscentrum en een tuin. Friendly and polite staff, very welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant served delicious dishes at affordable prices. It is the perfect place to relax for the weekend. The Guandi Family Temple is only a 10min walk from the property, very easy to reach and totally worth the visit. As for other tourism attractions although a bit far, the hotel can recommend drivers and the prices are acceptable.

The hotel is located in a very representative part of the city, with the river boulevard, a large shopping gallery, a park, and a plaza with museums and a concert hall all nearby. Taiyuan does not have good public transport, so taxis are the only viable option from the railway stations. The room is spacious and offers the quality one would expect at this price and star level. The staff speak passable English – something that is, unfortunately, becoming increasingly rare in China these days.

The hotel is so charming. It’s located in a traditional house within the walls. The staff is truly amazing. They offered us a transfer from and to the railway station and the value was really good. They also provided us with all the information to explore the old city. They also gave us snacks when we were leaving.

Jing's Residence is een verborgen juweeltje in de oude ommuurde stad Pingyao, die op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. The location and setting was like I was in a period Chinese movie! The bed provided the best night sleep I have had in the past 10 nights in China. Crystal spoke wonderful English & gave us some great recommendations for lunch.
