No place like this. It was my fourth visit, and I will certainly be back. I can’t wait to stay in a dome room.

Hartenbos Private Game Lodge is a privately-owned escape set in the malaria-free region of Hartenbos, Mossel Bay situated on the Garden Route. The reserve is surrounded by pristine fynbos and alive with wildlife — from Lions, Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo, Giraffe, Eland, Golden Wildebeest, and Zebra to more than 25 species of antelope, including the renowned Springbok. It is also a sanctuary for smaller predators such as the black-backed jackal, caracal, bat-eared fox, and civet and for bird enthusiasts, the skies and bushveld are filled with a dazzling variety of birdlife, from raptors and waterbirds to vibrant bush birds, making the lodge a paradise for birdwatching. Very good communication from host, beautiful setting. Upgraded to a villa free of charge due to an issue with the tent we originally booked.

The executive tented suites are spacious with a separate large lounge area. Each unit is elegantly decorated in colonial style with 4-poster beds and mosquito nets. The en-suite bathroom is lavishly equipped with a deep oval bath and an outdoor shower. You can relax next to your own private splash pool or enjoy the exciting bush swing between the trees. What a wonderful stay — but far too short. During our trip along the Garden Route, we absolutely wanted to do a game drive, so we booked one night here. But take our advice: one night here is simply not enough. To fully experience this place, you actually need at least two, maybe even three nights. Anyway, for anyone looking for a true safari experience in the western part of South Africa, there’s only one thing to say: Botlierskop is absolutely the right choice. Of course, it’s not Kruger — but hey, you know that in advance, and this reserve is clearly very well managed, and sustainably too. As for the accommodation: absolutely fantastic. Extremely spacious tented lodges with every imaginable comfort — and what views! We stayed in one of the lower lodges overlooking a pond where rhinos and buffaloes came to drink, just a few meters below us — truly breathtaking. The 3.5-hour game drive at sunset was educational and perfectly guided by Mel. The fact that we didn’t see lions didn’t matter at all — the rhinos, hippos, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, wildebeests, giraffes and zebras more than made up for it. Finally, the staff were friendly and discreet — what more could you ask for? We’ll definitely be back, next time with our children. Thank you!

The deck sits in the forest canopy and you can’t see any lights other than the stars at night. Set in Sedgefield, Soul Forest GeoDome - Off-grid Nature Escape offers accommodation with a plunge pool, a balcony and mountain views. This property offers access to a terrace, free private parking and free WiFi. The luxury tent has an outdoor fireplace and a hot tub. We loved our stay, it’s private enough that you can really relax. It was clean and comfortable and would definitely come back. My only suggestion is to make sure ice trays are full before new guests check in - but it did not take away from our stay.
