The location is a perfect base for jungle trekking but the best thing is the incredible staff and the amazing food. I’m genuinely sad to leave and it feels like I’m leaving my home. Everyone works so hard to make it a fabulous experience. I will never forget my time in Batu Kapal! The guest house is surrounded by a jungle landscape that was more beautiful than I could have imagined. There is a river close by that is perfect for a refreshing swim. The best of all: The exciting wildlife, filled with unique animals I’ve never seen in my entire life. When I woke up and looked around, there was a wild Orang-Utan mom with her child! At first I couldn't believe my eyes and thought I was still asleep - but they were actually there! We also visited a waterfall which I had a lot of fun at. The family who lovingly built the site, could not have been more welcoming. Not only were they incredibly friendly, but they were also funny and caring, and they shared with me their immense knowledge of the Sumatran wilderness. The food was delicious and many of the ingredients were freshly gathered near the property. I realized that one night was way too short and I spontaneously decided to stay 4 more nights. I recommend this place from the bottom of my heart! I will come again one day, that’s for sure.

Our stay here was amazing! The room is spacious, bed is comfortable, bathroom also nice and everything is clean. Also the room has a big balcony with incredible view. The staff was also great, we arranged everything we needed through them and it was not a problem. We also booked a one day jungle trek with them and it was excellent. Our guide Dani and his brother were good guides and also very nice people.

This place has a wonderful view of the rice fields. It is very quite and a few km away from the main area so on the streets to reach the hotel you get to see how local people really live. The staff is very friendly and pro active they organized the trekking (we got to see two huge orangutan!!!) for us and all the transfers we needed. They speak English very well and they bring you with the bike wherever you want. The bungalow is lovely and clean. I would return for sure. Don’t miss it!

We highly recommend Cheeky Monkeys as comfy and quiet place to stay in Bukit Lawang. The family run site of Sarah and Agus makes you feel like a family member. Everyone is every helpful, friendly and will give you a smile. The accomodation is clean, bed was large and very comfortable, the room and the towels had a very nice scent. staff helped us with an express wash of our trekking clothes. We had 2 times dinner and breakfast. it was excellent. fresh and well cooked veggie with exotic spices. they offer kitchen classes: at out next visit we will defintly join! Sarah organised a tailormade trekking for us. my husband and me, a professionell guide by the national park team and his assistent. they adjusted the trek to our needs: we are not the fittest ones and the area is steep and sometimes muddy. with the help of our guides we always felt safe and finally saw 3 Orangs on a 4hrs trek. It was great experiences! Overall 5/5 stars! Thank you Cheeky Monkeys!

We stayed in Bukit Lawang and it was amazing. Our guide Monang was very kind and took care of us all the time. We went to the jungle and saw orangutans and other monkeys. It was a big dream for me! After the trek we came back on the river with a fun rafting boat, it was so great. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, with nice people. We felt welcome and safe. I really recommend this place and our guide Monang, he was fantastic and made our trip very special.

We had a wonderful experience in North Sumatra thanks to Sumatra ethical expeditions and their crew. We spent two nights in the lodge and we did the 2D1N trek with our amazing guides Pika, Tenjong and Imuh. We will be forever grateful to them for taking such good care of us, for teaching us so much about the jungle and the animals, and for being so kind. I definitely recommend the experience. We were able to spot over 15 orangutans, many monkeys, including the Thomas leaf monkey and some gibbons, as well as hornbills (similar to toucans). The lodge is amazing, with a wonderful view of the nature surrounding this area. They provided us with transport service (shared or private) from Medan airport for a very good price. Breakfast is good as well as the dinner, all of it at great prices. The atmosphere is very calm and welcoming. Many thanks for such an unforgettable experience!!!
