There's a ski/boot room in the basement that opens onto the slope. The decor is a bit dated but in a very charming way.

I had a very pleasant stay despite it was raining for two days straight. The lady who runs the hotel is also very helpful and kind towards a foreigner like me. Very recommended for people who would like to experience proper Japanese stays.

Very large room for single or 2 persons, can probably fit a whole family. Keiko was super nice and helpful and had great suggestions for restaurants. There’s just a lot of attention to every detail overall. The toilets even had the highest quality toilet paper I’ve ever seen in Japan😀 The price in summer/off season was very fair. There is no AC but it should unusually not be needed. Even when it was 37 degree in Tokyo it was only 25 in Zao onsen.

It was possible to take part in the morning ceremony and immerse oneself in the local Shinto and Shugendo (mountain worship) culture. The food (breakfast and dinner) was great. Some of the best food I've eaten in Japan. The meals are prepared in the Japanese style with many small dishes and are similar to temple cuisine (Shojin Ryori) but include seafood as well. A different meal was prepared each day. The location is ideal to hike up one of the three local holy mountains, Mt. Haguro and visit the shrines along the way and on top of the mountain. The accomodation can be reached by bus. If you come by care it can also be a good base for visiting the other mountains in the region.

I stayed in this cozy lodge for a night with my friend. I appreciate very pleasant stay at the accommodation. The hosts are quite helpful and proactively proposed any possible sightseeing locations around the place. We had wonderful dinner and breakfast.
