We stayed for two nights so we could hike the Nakasendo Trail (Magome to Tsumago); allowing additional time to travel there and then time to relax before heading off. It seems a bit out of the way on the map, but that's exactly what we loved about the experience. Sakashita is in the mountains, is very quiet and non-touristy. If you love getting away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities, then this will fit the bill. The host was wonderful; he drove us to the trailhead (10 minutes) and gave clear instructions how to return, via a short bus and train ride. We were given dinner recommendations and chose Shuku Rin. Good choice. The host there was fantastic; she wasn't open until 6pm, but opened early as she saw us outside, most likely looking a bit sad and lost. This was a shared home, with a shared kitchen, sitting rooms, toilet and shower. We consider ourselves fortunate that we had the house to ourselves. An absolute must; stop at the restaurant partway on the trail and have Goehi Mochi (toasted rice balls on sticks, with warm sesame and walnut soy sauce.) What I would do to have one now... Our regret? Not having one (or two) orders each.

This was an ideal place to stay in Nakatsugawa. Location is great - 10 minute walk to train station/bus depot; grocery stores and restaurants nearby. Quiet residential street. Super clean and tidy! Host replied to my few questions quickly. Our room had plenty of storage. I appreciated the all cotton towels. Easy walking access to the Nakasendo Way for our day walk from Nakatsugawa to Magome. And especially delightful was the lovely woman who was our host.

This stay was just amazing. Our host was so kind and the meals he had prepared were delicious. The products were fresh and you couldn’t make them more local : the mushrooms we had in our soup were taken directly from his garden. Moreover, the room were really cozy and comfy as well the sauna. I really recommend it if you want to see the Japanese countryside and enjoy a relaxing stay

It was fabulous! Set in an old, traditional Japanese house but with modern furnishings inside, Motomiya is the kind of place that you will never want to leave. It is about a 7 mins walk from bus stop in Magome in very calm and quiet surroundings. At night we heard the sound of frogs croaking which was magical. The room was spacious with an amazing view of the mountains and rice fields. Futon beds were raised off the floor and very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were both exceptional. Keiko san, the landlady, was the perfect host, giving her guests local specialities to taste. It was all very delicious. There are only 3 rooms available which means it is nearly always booked up so I would advise early booking. Definitely worth the wait! Whether you are a tourist or resident, this place is a must to experience the true “omotenashi” of rural Japan.

The guesthouse is a beautiful 110 year old traditional wooden structure. The futon was very comfortable, all the facilities were great, and the room was spotless. Assi was a great host. I'd recommend Guesthouse Shigi to anyone visiting the Kiso Valley!

Kiko was such a great hostess - showed us to our lovely room, put on the heating as we were soaked and then provided more hot water when we asked. And then it was 6 and dinner time - probably our best meal in three weeks in Japan. After a good night’s sleep (even for my insomniac wife), the breakfast was just what was needed before another day of walking in the rain (most of you won’t have as much rain as us, I’m sure).
