The guest house has family rooms. Our three-night stay at Matraville Homestay was a very welcome change-of-pace after jungle treks and volcano hikes in Bukit Lawang and Berestagi. Our unit was VERY large (it would have easily suited a family of four) and well-appointed with a TV, fridge, sink and kettle for use. It was also spread over two levels, with the downstairs serving as the entrance/living room area/kitchenette, and the bedroom and bathroom/separate shower area upstairs. BONUS(ES): the unit entrance featured a little patio with a table and chair where you could have an early-morning coffee or tea while facing the sunrise; the upstairs level also provided a small balcony area to take in the morning sun or evening dusk. While the room we chose was across the street from the water (a 90-second walk at most, down a couple of shallow flights of steps, and therefore didn’t provide a direct waterfront view), there are two rooms available in another portion of the property that face the water and are just steps from it. Our excellent Host, Dimmer, picked us up from the Tuk Tuk ferry landing (and can also drop you off when you depart) and will provide you with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable, including tips on places to eat or have coffee nearby and suggestions for what to do/see on Samosir Island. He will also provide scooters for daily/multi-day use for very reasonable rates.

Dropped us of at the local bus stop and made sure we took the right bus.

Breakfast is available, and includes à la carte, continental and Asian options. Bun, the manager is simply fantastic. He made my stay special. The room was huge, clean and had everything I needed. The balcony looking over the street was also huge. The restaurant was awesome and Bun made THE best gado-gado in the world. As a bonus my bicycle was also allowed to sleep upstairs.

Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport is 130 km from the property. Best thing was Star and his wife ! Such nice people. Star took me out one night to drink like a local and watch the England game. Super good English speakers and very helpful. Great area with a very nice cafe opposite with live music Thursdays and Fridays. The couple have a little shop at the front of the property selling crisps, drinks,sweets, beer and cigarettes. Nice view from the balcony as well.

I liked everything. The first of many positives was the owner coming to pick me up at the dock. He came back because I had a big suitcase. After spending one night at Juma Cottages, I extended my booking for one more week. It was a perfect place to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Lake Toba. I strongly recommend Juma to anyone.

This Homestay is about 5 minutes walk from the ferry port. I had a pretty heavy suitcase with me and there was no way I could carry it on the uneven road and steep uphill. The owner, Marin, came with her scooter and picked up the suitcase right away. Upon the check-out was the same. Marin and Johanna were always available and very friendly. The view from our room was facing the lake and the beautifully maintained garden.

Everything perfect, except there was a communication gap issue, so I was for Saturday transferred to a lower rated place at same price.
