He called a boda boda (motorbike) for me when I had to get to Utende for scuba diving, and always greeted me when I arrived back at the property. He was there when I needed help or wanted company, but he was also kind and gave me space when I was looking for solitude. I felt very safe and welcomed as a solo female traveler.
