Hostels in Dar es Salaam

The room was very clean, the air condition and the hot water supply for showers was consistently reliable and the breakfast was nice. The staff was very welcoming and provided me with all the helpful information. As soon as I went out, there were small shops and a small market not far away where I could buy fresh vegetables and fruits. I hope to stay again next time！

The best part about my stay was how helpful, kind, and understanding the host is! Thank you so much for a good, though short, introduction to Dar es Salaam. If I needed anything, he didn't hesitate to help. I was happy to have excellent an mosquito net, a comfortable bed, and a private bathroom. Even though I booked a shared room, I ended up having it to myself. Also, I miscommunicated my arrival time, but they were still able to meet me very early in the morning to let me onto the property! Then whenever I needed transportation, the host would call for a motorbike for me, and he helped ensure they would take me to/from wherever I needed. Rose, who helps on the property and who made me a few delicious meals, even accompanied on my first outing to get a few things I needed. Thank you so much! Asante sana! I stayed here for just a few nights, so I purposefully chose somewhere close to the airport. The roads are bumpy and tight for cars/taxis, so either have the host help you coordinate a transfer to the property from the airport, or make sure you negotiate at the airport with someone who knows where the homestay is to get a fairer price. It seems very close when you look at a map - and it's actually a quick motorbike ride and a decent but doable walk - but the roads that are accessible to cars/taxis wind around a lot, so keep that in mind. Overall, I'd recommend this homestay to somebody who would like to experience a bit of a local experience outside of the main part of the city. Hotel staff are the best, very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Location is excellent too, and clearly marked from the main street. The room size was good for the price. I booked a room with AC, and it cooled the room like a charm. Room is very quiet, despite the hotel being in a busy side of city centre, but you can't hear a thing inside the room.

What an oasis of calm Mgulani Lodge hotel offers. Having never been to Dar, we were so grateful of the The Salvation Army Compound this hostel is linked with, offering a space of tranquility in a city that feels like it never stops. It very quickly felt like a home away from home. And the staff were willing to help with anything you asked. It was a real pleasure meeting the team, and even better knowing any money they make off your room booking goes into helping other programmes that the organisation are running in Tanzania.
