Idyllic Eiderstedt
In the late 1970s, many Hamburg residents sought a retreat in nature that was still within easy reach. Eiderstedt, with its expansive beaches, picturesque marshlands, and quiet villages, offered the perfect escape from city life. Back then the region was also less touristy than other coastal areas, promising peace and relaxation. St. Peter-Ording, with its famously long sandy beach, further enhanced the area’s appeal. The TV series "Gegen den Wind", which aired in the late 1990s, brought national attention to St. Peter-Ording, making it a well-known destination across Germany.
In 1978, Hans-Joachim Colmant, a professor of medicine at the University Hospital in Eppendorf, Hamburg, purchased this old schoolhouse. For the next thirty years, this old school became a cherished gathering place for the extended Colmant family – Hans-Joachim had six children. Here, the family celebrated summer gatherings, took advantage of Eiderstedt’s proximity to Hamburg for regular short breaks, and many of the grandchildren spent their summer holidays here in the north.
Today
Since 2017, the property has undergone extensive renovations in several stages, and it has once again become a permanent residence for a family member. In 2023, the decision was made to convert the space within the 1870 school building into a self-contained holiday flat, with the final touch – a new kitchen – set to be completed by November 2024. This little gem of Eiderstedt is now open to guests from near and far, ideal for couples or families with grown-up children seeking tranquillity and comfort. Large windows fill the rooms with light all year round, and the high ceilings and beautiful oak parquet flooring provide a stylish setting for up to four guests. Framed vintage school maps tell stories of the European Union’s development , marine life, and lighthouses. In this building, school’s out for good!
