Located a two minute walk from Coldingham Sands, named in 2023 as one of the Top 50 Beaches in the UK by The Times, formed of a wide crescent of golden sand, framed on either side by hills and cliffs in an area known for its dramatic coastline, outstanding natural beauty and abundant wildlifethat is popular with walkers and nature lovers. The beach is popular with families, divers and surfers and boasts a surf shop / school and a café. It is also famed for its marine life with vast rock pools emerging at low tide and seals, dolphins and even whales often visible from the shore. The area is also known for its golf courses, with Eyemouth, Dunbar, Goswick and North Berwick all within driving distance. A short walk away is the ancient fishing village of St Abbs, newly famous as the location of New Asgard in the Marvel movies.

There has been a settlement in Coldingham since around 640AD, when Saint Æbba founded a monastery here, housing both monks and nuns. Their behaviour apparently became so rowdy that St Cuthbert, the patron saint of Northumbria, was dispatched to restore some order. It is said that every evening he would walk down to Coldingham Sands and out into the sea until he was neck deep to bathe, staying in the water until dawn to avoid succumbing to the temptations of the flesh. A curious monk decided to follow him to the beach one evening and watched as Cuthbert sang psalms from the sea. When Cuthbert finally came back to shore, the story goes that he was followed by two otters; they warmed his ice-cold feet and dried him with their fur. We have been coming here for several years and fell in love with the area’s rich history and wild coastline as we hope you will too. The Bay itself is built on the site of a former derelict nursing home, called The Shieling (see photo). It was designed by the multiple RIBA award winning architectural practice Sutherland Hussey Harris and completed in January 2021. We are delighted that you have chosen to stay with us. Coldingham Sands was named as one of the Top 50 beaches in the UK by the Sunday Times, benefitting from a wide crescent of sand, crystal clear waters that are perfect for snorkelling and amazing marine life, with hundreds of rock pools emerging from the waves at low tide. Temperatures range from a balmy 15 degrees in August to a bracing 5 degrees in the winter. Luckily, St Veda’s Surf Shop rents wetsuits! Don’t forget to walk the Creel Path. This path has been in use for over 1000 years and was used by fisherman to carry their equipment and catch (a creel is the local name for a lobster pot) from Coldingham to the harbour at St Abbs and back. The path can be accessed by climbing over the stile on the right as you walk down from The Bay towards St Veda’s Hotel. What we call St Abbs today was known as Coldingham Shore until the late 19th century when the village came into the ownership of North British Distillery co-founder Andrew Usher. Usher funded the building of a church, a new school and a village hall and extended the outer harbour wall. However you may also want to settle down in front of Avengers: Endgame, the 2019 Marvel superhero film in which St Abbs doubled for New Asgard, the home village of Thor. There’s now a tourist-friendly sign in the village declaring that St Abbs is ‘Twinned with New Asgard’. “The coastal path between Eyemouth and Saint Abbs is littered with tales of smugglers and shipwrecks. Names like Cauldron Cove and Horsecastle Bay hint at dark deeds and dangerous tides. In Saint Abbs the Ebbcarrs Cafe serves hearty portions of the daily catch – langoustines, lobster, dressed crab and steaming bowls of Cullen skink – to weary walkers. Fishing is a family business. The boats in the harbour that supply the cafe are owned by a generation whose ancestors perished in the 1881 fishing disaster, when 189 men – fathers and sons – lost their lives in a freak storm. In fact, the food was so good that we stopped in again on the way back.”
