This is a hidden retreat, tucked amongst charming historic houses and opposite the River Avon and Monkton Park. Artisan Cottage is set over 3 floors and is Grade II* listed. It was originally a cottage for those who prepared and spun the wool that was brought into the ancient market town of Chippenham. It has been sympathetically restored to a traditional Wiltshire cottage with exposed Cotswold stone walls and oak lintels to create a delightful place to stay. Enter through a wrought iron gate and along a cobbled alleyway into the entrance with exposed Cotswold stone walls. From the well equipped kitchen/diner, a staircase leads up into a characterful and spacious sitting-room with a real fire for TV-watching and relaxing; through the sitting room the bathroom is handsome with white-wood floors and gorgeous Bramley products. A 2nd staircase heads up to a bedroom with charming exposed beams, stripped-oak furnishings, crisp white linen and light-coloured walls; relaxed but smartly done. There is a Tesla Charger at the property (available upon request)
We are passionate about Wiltshire and love to share this with our guests. In fact, we love it so much that we moved here from London and restored the old house and it's cottage. On the edge of the Cotswolds, gorgeous villages and countryside surround you, what's more it's close to the beautiful city of Bath. A short drive, Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. We hope that you enjoy the area as much as we do.
Nestled on the banks of the River Avon and easily accessible by rail and road, Chippenham offers an ideal centre for relaxation and exploration of rural Wiltshire, Bath and The Cotswolds. 4 miles south of the M4 and on the mainline rail route from London Paddington to the West Country and just 10 minutes by train to the world-famous historic city of Bath. Artisan cottage is located on St Mary Street, a line-up of period houses — medieval, timber-framed, Queen Anne, Georgian — the English poet John Betjeman is said to have called the street “the most perfect unselfconscious bit of English country townscape one could hope to find”. The street even features in the opening credits of the Antiques Roadshow! Set within a bustling market town, with real-ale pubs, restaurants and bars. A short drive away there are fabulous country gastropubs, and excellent restaurants, including two with Michelin stars. Distance to Chippenham station is just 10 minutes walk. The National Trust village of Lacock and beautiful Castle Coombe (used for many historic films) are a 10 mins drive away. Avebury 20 mins drive, Stonehenge 40 mins drive. Bowood House & Gardens 10 mins drive. The Cottage is well located for the wedding venues of Kin House, Castle Coombe and Euridge Manor
