Welcome to our holiday cottage, Coastguards View, in Mevagissey, Cornwall. Coastguards View is part of the original 1870 Coastguard Station overlooking the traditional Cornish fishing harbour of Mevagissey.
BOOKINGS ARE FRIDAY TO FRIDAY ONLY FROM BEGINNING OF APRIL TO END OF OCTOBER We love Cornwall and spent many holidays here before buying Coastguard's View in late 2018 - having renovated it during 2019 the cottage has been available for holiday rentals since 2020. During your stay FRIDAY TO FRIDAY BOOKINGS - The cottage is available to rent on a full week only basis, Friday changeovers, from around beginning of April through to around the end of October with short breaks available during low season months (except Christmas and New Year plus other exceptions as listed in T&C) After your booking is confirmed we will supply a Cottage Info PDF via email prior to your arrival - access to cottage is via key box. THINGS TO DO Places to Eat in Mevagissey There are many places to eat within the village – starting at the harbour and working outwards, and in no particular order – Sharksfin Restaurant, Harbour Tavern Pub, Wheelhouse Pub/Cafe, Alvorada Portugese Restaurant, She Sells Cafe, Tea on the Quay cafe, The Fountain Pub, Cellar Bar, The Ship Inn Pub, Salamander Restaurant, The Kings Arms Pub, Mevagissey Spice Indian Restaurant to name some and numerous other options available as well. Shops, Crafts and Galleries in Mevagissey Many independent shops selling locally produced craft items, galleries with local paintings and photography and, as mentioned above, various cafes set around little cobbled streets. Coastal Path Depending on how far you want to go, and being fairly steep and challenging in places, this section of the coastal path takes you either eastwards towards Pentewan (maybe a couple of hours walk there and back) and then further on towards Porthpean, Duporth and Charlestown beyond or if you head westwards instead then the path takes you through Portmellon and on to Gorran Haven (several hours each way) Places to visit further afield include The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project, Charlestown, Fowey, Looe, Polperro, Truro and Falmouth
Mevagissey dates back hundreds of years with records going back as far as 1313 with further evidence of early settlement stretching back as far as the Bronze Age. The Coastguard Cottages were built around 1870 to house the Coastguards and their families. By this time in Mevagissey’s history, besides it’s thriving fishing industry, the harbour had acquired a reputation for smuggling – the cottages were constructed on higher ground, not only to provide the Coastguards a good vantage point of what was going on down in the harbour but, apparently, to also reduce the chance of them becoming involved in the smuggling activity themselves..! Today Mevagissey remains one of Cornwall’s larger fishing ports with over 70 active fishing vessels and was recently heavily featured in a BBC2 documentary series, first broadcast in January 2020, “Cornwall – This Fishing Life” Tourism to this traditional Cornish fishing village continues to thrive and, with many holiday cottages available in and around the village together with popular holiday parks in the surrounding area, a great deal of the village economy centres around tourism. The village has a lovely warm and relaxed atmosphere offering many shops, cafes, galleries, craft shops, restaurants and pubs along its old cobbled streets helping to create an idyllic Cornish holiday experience.
