Company information

Graig Wen has been our home and business for 16 years. Our award-winning camping and glamping site has won two North Wales Tourism Awards and we have been featured in national media as recommended place to stay. Empress Wagon has been awarded Gold Status for the quality of accommodation from Visit Wales. We built the wagon ourselves with the help of local craftsmen during the winter lockdown. We are proud that we have many fantastic reviews of our accommodation, location, standard of cleanliness and welcome. We love to welcome back our many repeat guests and the friends and family they recommend. As well as shepherd's huts and yurts we offer pitches for camper vans and tents. We also have 4 holiday cottages on site. John and Sarah packed up their lives in Brighton in 2006 and left town with their dogs in an old motorhome. We discovered Graig Wen after a year on the open road – we had found the wild escape of our dreams. We feel incredibly privileged to call Snowdonia home. It’s our pleasure to share it with others.

Property information

Enjoy our fantastic location on Snowdonia's Mawddach Estuary from the comfort of our en suite Empress wagon. Walk to our viewpoint for breathtaking views and down our (steepish) track to the Mawddach Trail - one of the most scenic paths in the country. The larger of our two Quarry Wagons, Empress has a standard size double bed and an optional 6ft 1″ bench bed. The small en suite shower room is heated and also has a wash basin and flushing loo. The wagon is fully insulated with an infrared heater for instant warmth at the flick of a switch. There’s electric lighting and a USB charge point. Because sometimes you need to stay connected, there’s 4G on site and free wifi nearby. You can whip up simple meals in the kitchenette with a gas hob, sink and cool box inside the wagon . Cooking implements and crockery are provided. There’s also use of a fridge freezer close at hand. There's a dining table over which the double bed simply pulls down at bedtime. Double bedding is provided so just bring towels. You can park one vehicle right by the wagon so it’s easy to get settled in with your luggage. There is a private seating area with fairy lights right outside the wagon. We are in the Snowdonia Dark Skies Reserve so it’s perfect for sitting at the picnic table and star-gazing around the fire bowl. Empress is a little less secluded than our yurts and shepherd’s hut, located on the small camper van area of our camp site. You’ll have a few neighbours in up to half a dozen camper vans/caravans (less in winter) but our site is very quiet, laid back and friendly. Empress Wagon is tucked away in the corner, sheltered by trees. So although views are limited, you only have a few steps to walk to the shared seating area by our breathtaking viewpoint. We are on the site of a former Victorian slate quarry so Empress is called after the traditional names for sizes of slate used by local Welsh quarrymen. Empress slates are the largest!

Neighbourhood information

Our accommodation in Snowdonia National Park is at the heart of adventure activities and historic attractions for active visitors. You can go on long walks in Snowdonia national park wales, horse-riding on sandy beaches, mountain biking at Coed-y Brenin, whitewater rafting, or try Zip World adventures at slate quarries. Right here between Barmouth and Dolgellau on the Mawddach Estuary there is so much to see and do on our doorstep. Here’s a few of our top tips for local days out: Cycle or walk the flat water-side Mawddach Trail to the George III pub, Fairbourne’s and Barmouth’s blue flag beaches, shops and steam railway. Stroll over Barmouth’s iconic bridge for crabbing on the quay, fish and chips, ice cream and bargain-hunting. Catch Emily’s ferry back to Fairbourne. Climb up Arthog waterfalls and on up to Cadair Idris mountain. Read about one family’s experience of climbing our local mountain, C You will find loads of tips for our favourite places to visit, shop, eat and drink in the Guest Welcome Guide which is emailed to you when you book. You can walk, or even better, bike to a couple of local pubs. It’s an hour and 15 minutes walk along the beautiful Mawddach Estuary Trail, or 25 minutes by bike on cycle path all the way to the George III at Penmaenpool. There’s a great range of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants within 10 minute’s drive of Graig Wen. Dolgellau has an excellent butchers, a couple of bakeries and Gwin Dylanwad is a popular boutique wine store which also sells Welsh cheeses and snacks. There’s a couple of supermarkets too. You’ll find a warm welcome in our independent stores where you’ll hear the Welsh language being spoken – try saying Diolch / thanks! Our small online shop sells local a craft beer and you can order breakfast croissants and get your morning fix of flat white. There’s a beach bar in Fairbourne or work up a thirst walking along the Mawddach Trail for a pint in the George III pub.
