A short drive away the small market town of Helmsley has a wide variety of independent shops and eateries, a Mediaeval castle and Walled garden. You can visit the magnificent Castle Howard a stately home with landscaped gardens, or catch a steam train from Pickering on The North Yorkshire Moors Railway - book an afternoon tea on board and marvel at the stunning scenery from a different angle from Pickering to Whitby on the coast, where you can wander around Whitby Abbey, or have fish and chips on the harbour. For spectacular panoramic views of the Vale of York, take a walk along the top of Sutton Bank and visit the famous White Horse 'painted' on the hillside. At the foot of the hills Kilburn is home to the Mouseman Visitor Centre which will take you on an amazing journey through the life and times of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson from humble beginnings to a furniture making legend. A 30 minute drive East, the market town of Malton holds monthly food fairs and is considered Yorkshire's capital of food, with many artisans and makers producing award-wining products.
