Famous for linen and textiles in the 1300s, the market place, surrounded by 18th century houses, reflects the town’s prosperity from the era's cloth trade, before it went on to become a major wool and textile producing area. Today, the picturesque market place holds markets on Mondays and Fridays, and there are plenty of shops, pubs and tea-rooms. Aylsham is the northern terminus of the Bure Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge steam railway which takes you through the countryside to Wroxham. For those who love the outdoors, Aylsham station marks the start of the Bure Valley Walk, a walking and cycling path that runs alongside the railway. The Weavers Way trail also begins here, leading to North Walsham along a disused railway line, perfect for walking, cycling, or horse riding. Famously a gateway to the Norfolk Broads, here you can hire boats. The annual Aylsham Country Show is held every August bank holiday.
